Have a few questions about the area of Holmes County. We want to go there and are very new at all this. Would like to stay in a CG that would allow us to see the Amish in their fields. But we do not have a toad and need to know about renting a car when we arrive.

Evergree RV Resort at Mount Eaton (Dundee) will allow you to see many Amish in their buggies driving on the highway. Very nice park and very well managed.

Scenic Hills is an excellent campground. Call them and ask about car rentals. This is a full hookup only facility with no shower facilities. It is located in the center of the action and is lower in cost. GREAT MANAGEMENT!

Here is my Holmes County post from another thread. The closest (only) place to rent a car is in Wooster. Enterprise will come to the campground and pick you up and take you back to the rental agency.

Ohio Amish country, primarily located in Holmes County is a great experience. My parents were born, raised and buried there and we have been back often throughout my childhood and adult life.

More Amish live there (over 40K)than Lancaster County, PA. Berlin is a little touristy but not ruined. Visit Boyd & Worthmans Restaurant in Berlin (pronounced BURR lin, not to be confused with that city in Germany) for a roast beef sandwich with gravy. Go to the town of Mt. Hope on Wednesday when the Amish have a big livestock and hay auction and farmers market. There is also a flea market there. Hundreds of Amish buggys and horse drawn wagons lined up. Across the street is Lehman's Hardware with a large assortment of farm stuff ie white gas powered irons and hundreds of various gas and oil lanterns and lamps for Amish clientele. Just ride around and sight see. Charm Valley is filled with Amish farms. You can see for miles and not one telephone pole in sight. Keim Lumber in Charm carries amazing and interesting wood working tools for the Amish. The little towns around are nice too, Millersburg, Glenmont, Killbuck. They are mostly like they were 30-50 years ago.

I recommend Scenic Hills RV Park; not many trees but nice people and usually have free firewood. Free wifi last time we stayed there. We haven't stayed at Evergreen, but hear it is nice. More money than Scenic Hills. We don't care about the pool, but your family might. Also, no bath house; its for RV's.

The butcher shop in Winesburg, near Berlin, has lots of specialty sausages, smoked hams and bologna and the prices are reasonable. The county is famous for its Swiss cheese and whole cow bologna. Trail Bologna (from nearby Trail, Oh) is best known but I think think Winesburgs Meats version is better.

Amish made furniture is a big industry there and there are lots of furniture places. If you do go a MUST SEE is Warthers Carvings about 25 miles away in Dover on I-77. You won't believe it unless you see it. I have never taken anyone there that wasn't amazed. Nothing to do with the Amish, but fascinating.

Do a Google on the Amish for a quick education to learn the difference between Mennonites and Old Order. Hint; the Mennonites have been around longer

The original Lehman's Hardware is in Kidron and an auction and flea market is there as well. Also in Kidron you can visit Gerber's Poultry and get fresh chicken fried or barbecued in a box lunch; yummy. And Yes, Winesburg Meats is THE best!

OkieNewbie: Here's a favorite drive of mine. Take Rt.62 through Wilmot, Winesburg, and Berlin; Amish restaurants, shops, and Heini's Cheese. Continue west and catch Rt. 557 south to Charm where you can visit Keim Lumber. In Charm take C70 (county road 70) to 39/515 and Walnut Creek. Der Dutchman restaurant is Amish food served family style; quite famous. In Walnut Creek take Rt. 515 north to Rt. 62 where you started.

There are many many roads around this area to cruise and see farms. A DeLorme Gazeteer can really help. Once you get to know your way around, don't be afraid to explore. The Amish sell handmade quilts, baskets, eggs and baked goods right out of their homes. Watch for signs along any of the roads.

To see the Warther Museum (which I highly recommend too) take Rt. 39 east to Sugarcreek, another town with heavy Amish influence. There are several cheese houses in the area including Doughty Valley Cheese. Continue on 39, and stop at the Breitenbach Winery for some excellent fruit wines. Follow Rt.39 into Dover and watch for the signs to Warther's; very easy to find.

Other things to see; The Wilderness Center in Wilmot; Brewster Cheese and the Brewster Railroad Museum; Secrest Arboretum in Wooster; Shreve Swamps and the Killbuck Wilderness area.

Ever been to My Hope? I have, about a hundred times. Here is the link to Lehman's Hardware in Mt. Hope. Yes, there is one in Kidron, too.

LOL oh yes Mt. Hope is only about 20 minutes from me. My mistake I forgot about the small Lehman's in Mt. Hope. The one in Kidron is the original, and was recently expanded to 40,000 square feet.

Try the Amish Campground outside of Winesburg on Rt. 62. It isn't fancy, but Ruth and John are great hosts and we've met wonderful people everytime.

Evergreen RV Resort if you want a really nice place to stay with all the amenities. It's a little North of most of the attractions but we find the drive enjoyable.
Scenic Hills if you want a decent place to park and don't expect a lot of amenities. It is still a decent little campground and you can't beat the location and price. We don't spend much time at the campground when we visit anyway. We go at least twice a year and switch between the two. Enjoy the area.
