You're my kind of businessman and person. I feel the same way.

Strict, unbending rules only hurt a business, imo... Very sad.

I have only seen through Franks eyes, I'll hold my vote until I can see through the clerks eyes.

How can you vote only knowing one side.

You're going to have to stay out of a small mom n pop store called Toys-R-Us then too. They've required a receipt for the last 2-3 years.

...Frankie, don't all places require a receipt for returns.......??

Nope. A few years back I bought a Coleman generator from Orchard Supply Hardware. I ended up leaving it in the box for almost a year as I never needed it. When I took it out of the box to use it a few times I noticed it was leaking oil. I finally got to taking a closer look and I noted there was a crack in the engine block. By now I've owned it well over a year. I took it to the local authorized repair center for Coleman and they said sorry, it's out of the warranty period, we'll fix it for $400. That's more than it cost. I took the generator back to Orchard Supply figuring the manager would just laugh at me. I explained the situation to him, I told him it leaked from the first time I even used it, and told him what happened at the repair center. He said no problem and he took the generator back and gave me a new one. I didn't have a leg to stand on, but he did the right thing and now Orchard Supply gets all my business.

How Much Does Shoplifting Cost Businesses?

Businesses lose an estimated $16 billion each year to shoplifting.
Each family in the US spends $300 per year to subsidize what shoplifters steal.
Nearly 90% of the population has, during their lifetime, shoplifted.
There is a shoplifting theft every five seconds of every day.
Shoplifting accounts for 30% of all reported crime.
One third of all new businesses fail due to retail theft.
Adolescents account for nearly 50% of shoplifters, but they only steal one-third as much as adults.
Shoplifting accounts for five to 10 cents on each dollar spent in our retail economy.

For more on crime prevention, visit the following websites:
National Crime Prevention Council and Washington State Crime Prevention Association

Wal-Mart would more than double its profits if they could eliminate shoplifting and employee theft. Some stores lose as much as 5% to shoplifting while making only a 3% profit. Yet Wal-Mart still has the lowest prices as well as some of the most liberal return policies. The message is you can't completely sacrafice customer service to prevent theft.

How many times have you not purchased a product because it was locked in the cabinet and you didn't want to waste the time to try and find a clerk to unlock the cabinet? Some stores lose more in sales by locking things up than they would lose in shoplifting if they would leave it out where customers can get to them. It's a balancing act.

My DH is a fanatic about receipts...he probably has receipts for stuff we don't even have anymore.

My ex was the exact opposite...when I tried to balance the business checkbook, I had to look in shirt pockets, under the truck seats; everywhere! I gave up on the personal checkbook.

A lot of "Big Box" stores are requiring receipts these days. Just how much profit is there in giving a refund or credit for something that was NOT purchased, just because you are going to buy the larger one. ROFLMAO! How is it obvious that it was purchased from there, when you don't have a receipt. How do they know you didn't STEAL IT. It certainly is not obvious to me.

Maybe if you read what the OP wrote you will see how obvious it was that it was purchased there.

Now Kenny, isn't that how most of us here see things? Through the eyes of fellow rv.net members? I posted my thoughts based on what Frank said and how I would feel as a customer.
A couple of other posts were based on how they did business. We just handled our business different is all.

Since when does a tag on a box mean that the item was actually purchased? Without a receipt the store owner has no way of knowing if the item was stolen or not.

Not saying you stole the item Frank, just saying there are LOTS of people in this world who steal from stores and later return them to the store for cash. It's not the store's fault that they have to implement strict return policies. It's your fellow human beings that have caused that to happen.

oh come on, it would be pretty difficult to steal a jack from a mom and pop store. Sometimes you just have to be realistic if you want to stay in business.

I have been in business a long time because I am realistic, stuff happens. You work with customers when appropriate it is not just good will, it makes ME feel better to rise above any feeling I have of distrust and accusations of these customers. Some things can't be explained away to a equitable resolution. As a store owner, I would look at the product being exchanged or returned, see if I sold it, see if realistically it could have been shoplifted, then act accordingly.

But that is me and that is one of the reasons I am successful
