I have had dogs for a long time before we finally settled on having just our cat. But when we owned our Wire Fox Terriers, one did something I have never seen another dog do. When driving on a freeway or highway, she would duck every time we went under an overpass. Every time! She would look up and lower her head while we went under it and then return to sitting straight up after we passed. As far as I know she has never hit her head on an overpass so I don't know how she learned it or why she did it. Any one else?

Dogs are a strange bunch. Some do have odd behaviors. Don't know why yours did what she did. Our Haylie will sit on the deck at night and stare at the moon for the longest time. Agnes

I exhibit the same behavior when I drive my F250 into a parking garage, those darn beams look like they're gonna take my roof off!

A Canis Familiarius has visual challenges compared to us. For example, Dogs as research shows, can only see two colors, yellow and blue. Dogs do not have the ability to focus as well on the shape of objects (their visual acuity is lower). An object a human can see clearly may appear to be blurred to a dog looking at it from the same distance. A rough estimate is that dogs have about 20/75 vision. This means that they can see at 20 feet what a normal human could see clearly at 75 feet. Therefor an overpass coming up at 60 mph all of the sudden appears to a dog's brain as a big shadow coming at him. Thus the ducking reaction. I doubt you could have changed that behavior, and didn't present a real problem anyway!

I'm a bit of a dog behavior buff, and the strangest thing I've seen so far is a Shetland Sheepdog that would go out side to poop, and while out there, stare at the sun and bark for as long as he was outside. He went blind from this pattern, his retina's burned out from the sun! My idea of "doggie sunglasses" came too late for him!
And I'm working on my parking garage head ducking reflex, too!

Back in the 60s we traveled From Kansas to Texas several times with our windows down in an old VW and our parakeet got to where he'd make the swishing sound of passing under an underpass and he'd duck down. When we'd get home he would do it over and over. Swish and duck, etc. It was funny to watch. No, we weren't hippies, just poor college students.

Our Happy does the same thing.

She loves to ride on the dashboard, and as soon as she sees a bridge or, worse yet, a tunnel...she starts nervously starts looking over her shoulder, and finally jumps down until we've passed through whatever got her attention.

Have you thought that maybe she was intimidating you….LOL Sometimes we do things that we are not aware of….still…LOL

I would love to see that….Baby had a habit of watching the line on the road. On day while in the car I happened to look over and the driver next to me was looking at Baby, then the ground to see what see was looking at and we both had a laugh.

Our cocker spaniel did the same, ducking under bridges. It was funny.

I've done that, too, as if it would help! LOL! I always think how stoooooooopid I look when I do that . . . I doubt dogs think they look stupid. They're just doing what dogs do!

One of our rat terriers will turn her head and look away if there is an oncoming car. Or, if there is a lot of traffic she'll ride backwards so she doesn't have to see any vehicles coming at us. Weird dogs!
