Just wanting to get opinions on what the upper mileage limit you'd consider if buying a used diesel truck. I know it all depends on how it's been maintained and driven, but sometimes it's pretty tough to know that answer. One of the truck's I'm considering is a 2004 Dodge 3500 with 166,000km (103,000 miles). It's not excessive, but it's still scares me a bit. Thanks.

JMO I had a 1998 1 ton with 100500 miles. It did not bother me to go on a long trip. Cummins has a 100k warranty on motor. I would not worry about the mileage. If owner has any records about maint. see if you can get them. If not you can go to a Dodge dealer with the owner info and they can bring up the work history of the vehl.. Good luck

It's not the engine I would be so concerned about, it's the rest of the truck! The engine may go 300,000 miles, but the truck may be falling apart at 150,000 and the tranny may only go 100,000.

I looked at selling my '92 F350 with gas engine and only 50K miles to buy my friend's '94 F350 with the diesel and 150K miles. Both trucks crewcab 4x4 longbeds. Yeah, the engine was fine, but the rest of the truck was leaking from every place that held any kind of fluid and the frontend was worn out. Someone had their hands in the wiring and there were unidentified wires going every which way.

No thanks! I kept my gasser that's in perfect shape with no leaks and tight frontend and the only one who has been working on it is me, so I know exactly what's what. Would be nice to have a diesel, but not in that truck. I would like to have taken the engine out of it to put in mine, after fixing the oil leaks of course.

I had that truck, sold it when it was 2 years old and had 65,000 miles on it. I wholesaled it to a truck dealership for top dollar. They didnt think anything of the high mileage.

That mileage is trivial for model and year. A four year-old truck isn't likely to have major body or electrical problems. There are no major recalls on that model. My only concern would be the transmission & any good mechanic should be able to tell you if it's ok.

166K is quite a bit for an 04 but not huge mileage. I don't think that alone would stop me from buying a truck. My 01 has 85,000 KM on it and that includes a trip to Newfoundland and back but that is probably closer to the other extreme. What has it been used for, how has it been maintained and how much do they want for it? That would be more my concern.

That engine is just getting broken in. I would buy it and not be the least bit worried about the engine. I would make sure it was running good with no oil leaks tho.

personally the mileage wouldn't bother me. i bought a 99 f250 psd with 120k, now it has 170k, no leaks, runs great, best truck i ever owned. ask yourself if you bought it with 60k, how long before you had 100k on it, and is worth the extra money the lower mileage unit would cost? if you can save some major bucks, then i think its worth it.
