I'm on my way again from B.C. Canada to Ohio. And every time I drive through South Dakota I notice that mile post 69 east and west is missing. Does South Dakota have somebody working for them with a sick mind???? Or does the number 69 not exist in South Dakota, just, only in the rest of the world. mm mm

I don't know the answer to the mile marker question.... BUT.... !!! ...
Regardless of what else you encounter or plan on your trip through South Dakota on I-90...
Make sure that you stop at "Wall Drugs" located at the little town of Wall, South Dakota..
Just look for the big green dinosaur on the north side of the highway..
Plan on several hours, maybe even a half or even a whole day there... and take your camera !!
it is more exciting and intriguing than anything I have ever found in my travels around America..

TWO CENTS WORTH
The story goes that a man died and was approached by the Devil who told him that he could buy his soul back for a dollar. The man searched his pockets and could only come up with 98 cent. While begging the Devil to forget the two cent he was short, an Angel happened by and hearing the Devil laughing, asked the man, "Would you mind if I put in my two cents ?" The Devil got so mad that he exploded in a puff of smoke and the man's soul was saved.
The moral: Sometimes putting in your two cents worth makes a difference.

That's a number kids like to steal.
Hard to keep signs on US-69, a lot more to take than just one milepost.
Nostalgia geezers like to steal the Historic Route 66 signs.
Between the two, keeps the sign shop in OK City busy.

Wall is really hardly worth stopping for. Just a shopping center really. The big draw used to be free ice water.

yep, I avoided it my first dozen trips thru. also avoided the Corn Palace. my last trip I stopped at both. Wall Drug was a waste of time, the Corn Palace was actually interesting as there was some big polka doings going on at the time.

Well as usual we are off the original subject. The lack of the number 69 is interesting but not significant. How many people are observant enough to find one missing mile post?

I have done the Pacific NW to Minnesota drive on I-90 across South Dakota several times. My random thoughts...
- The SD rest areas are really tourist marketing centers. Find out all you need to know about any tourist trap in the state.
- Wall Drug... You have got to stop at least once. After all, you have been seeing the signs for the past thousand miles or so. Besides, you probably were due for a restroom break anyway.
- Badlands. Beautiful. Don't let the rest stop tourist guides skew you though... There are some step roads which are not to be attempted by the marginal tow rig.... like my old 1976 Plymouth with a U-haul trailer behind it.
- Mount Rushmore. DO NOT MISS! The all new visitor center really expands on the monument. Be sure to go through some of the exhibits. You will quickly realize you are literally and figuratively standing in the shadow of giants.
- Devil's Tower. Okay, so this is in Wyoming. Also worth the trip if you are in any way a sci-fi or Spielberg fan.

You have to be kidding! Wall Drug (and it is Wall Drug, not Wall Drugs) is nothing but a huge TT (that's tourist trap). Maybe an hour or so but not all day.

I just returned from 10 days in South Dakota. Wall Drug? I suppose once for an hour but probably never again. The 1880's town? What a disapointment. The Badlands? Fantastic, not to be missed. By all means go hiking too. The boys had a ball "mountain climbing". Especially the Naqtional Park Service Visitor Center and the ranger programs at the campground. BTW, with the Golden Age card camping was $5 per night. The Black Hills? Good but a fair number of tourist traps. I had 3 grandchildren (4,7,9) with me so the tourist traps were fun too. Bear Country USA, Reptile Gardens, Old McDonald's Farm etc. The 1880's train was great. Wind Cave National Park camping was $6 and the cave was neat too. The ranger programs at the campground were great there too. Jewel Cave was cool as well. Mount Rushmore was good and the lighting ceremony was good. Plan on 2 or 3 hours and plan on a traffic jam when the lighting ceremony is over. The Crazy Horse Mountain was good too. Best memento? They have pieces of rock fist sized from the blasting and you can take what you want for a free will donation. None of the pieces of rock said "made in China" either! BTW, South Dakota for whatever reason allows truck drivers to sleep in the rest areas but not RV's. Struck me as stupid and I asked a fellow at one of the visitor centers why it was so. He insolently slid a card to me and said I could mail a complaint. I plan to complain to South Dakota on line. Iowa, btw, doesn't seem to treat RV's and trucks differently. With my pickup camper last year Minnesota didn't care either. I did stay at Flying J in Rapid City one night and they were quite gracious.
