My wife and I have camped at the Fort Desoto campground outside St Petersburg, FL many times and just love it. In traveling over the Sunshine Skwy bridge outside St Petersburg over Tampa Bay I have seen RVs parked on the 4 fishing piers, even late at night. I have always assumed that laws do not permit overnight parking on these piers, but I am not sure this is true. Being able to dry camp on one of these fishing piers one night,to be able to get into a campground early the next morning, would be very helpful. Has anyone stayed at these piers on the Sunshine Bridge for one night, and does anyone know what the exact law is? I would not want to have a local police person asking me to leave at 2am. Thanks.

The fishing pier are now part of the State Park system and yes you can park overnight or longer. Fee is $10.00 for 24 hrs with a max load allowed of 24,000 lbs.

Like JFG says, Yes. You gotta do it once even if you don't fish. Chances are someone will give you some fish.

JFG - Thanks for the info on the Sunshine Skywy Bridge and camping there overnight, which will be a great place to stay for one night before my Fort Desoto reservation starts the following day.

I'm booked at Fort DeSoto this November. that is great to know!
Where do you go to get a 'permit' to park there? Would you do that inside of Fort DeSoto?

Here is the website for the Sunshine Skywy Bridge - http://www.floridastateparks.org/skyway/default.cfm - it appears that you pay at the entrance, but I am not sure of that.

Whoops, I was thinking the OP meant along the bridge on the way to Fort DeSoto itself. Yes, I see that the Sunshine Skyway Bridge likely has an entrance that you would pay at.
Still, great to know! Thanks!

P.S. Enjoy your stay at DeSoto!! I can't wait to get there. I visit the beach area each year, but this will be my first time to camp - I've always 'drooled' as I go along and see those campsites right on the water!

Keep in mind. They (Ft DeSoto) have 25 spots that are pullup only and cannot be reserved. Or is it 15...oh I cant remember. We plan on pulling up and grabbing a spot soon. granted i HIGHLY doubt any are on the water. I think they are mainly in the middle....still not bad though.

Have any of you drove out and actually parked out on the bridge, looks pretty cool, I tried once and turned around as it was getting pretty narrow. We weren't planning on staying just wanted to check it out or I would have gone out.
