I switched my '07 Duramax to synthetic oil at 10k miles. I did the "Old School" break-in period. Now I only use Schaeffer oil nose to tail. Schaeffer's has also improved my fuel mileage. I get 19-21 on the highway when empty and 13-15 towing my TT. Happy trails...

I checked with the local NAPA store and they didn't stock any "blinker fluid". I assume this is the lubricant that goes in the turn signals. Is that correct?

My NAPA store stocks it between the flux capacitor bulbs and that new machine that rotates the air in your tires...

If you want to look at something different look at the Corvettes they insist on Synthetic and If I recall do oil changes at 10K.

Several other high performace cars come from the factory with it.

When I had my Ford 7.3 it had 90K when I bought it, I went to "the diesel forum" scouting around on switching to syn, everybody said no if you switch on an older engine the syn will loosen up many of the oil deposits around gaskets due to it's cleansing properties and oil leaks will likely develop. So I stuck with Rottella for another 100K changing out every 3K. Their consensus was the switch s/b done before 25-35K.

On my new 8.1 yes it's gas but a big block, I dropped the oil at 2500 and switched, I change out at 7500-8000 all is good.

I think if you coat a small metal part with Syn Vs. dino and try to pick it up you'll feel the difference.

Cost, about $5 v $2-3, divide that cost differential over 7500 miles on a per mile basis and it amounts to paying a penny or two more or less than fuel.

Having just switched from dino to Rotella synthetic(5w40?) I picked up 1 1/2 mpg empty and 1 mpg towing. The temp guage used to move around a little in the mountains but didn't this last trip. I buy all my filters on dieselplace.com and the oil at Wallyworld and take it to the dealer for a $15 oil change and lube. I'll be switching the tranny in about 3k miles to syn also. Is it worth it??? I think so but you'll have to decide. I've always used the GM computer for my oil changes (7-9k miles) and still will. Good luck!

I use syn 'cause that's what it came with new. Amsoil in all of it.

There are two reasons that I use synthetic oil.

1st, in cold weather a diesel with synthetic will crank over much easier compare to the same engine running dino oil.

2nd, synthetic has a higher point at which the oil will burn. You may never reach this extreme high temperature point with normal use of your TV. What I like it for is if I get in a hurry and don't do a proper cool down after hard running (3-5 minute idle time), I believe the synthetic will protect the turbo charger much better than dino oil. Most turbo failure comes from frying the oil in the bearings before they have cooled down.

Another note is that synthetic will hold its viscosity longer than dino oil. This will be more of a factor of your maintenance schedule of oil changes. So the use of synthetic still comes down more to your type of driving and use of the motor. This is where the cost factor comes in and it becomes a personal choice.

For what it's worth, I use synthetic in all three (car/gas, SUV/gas & truck/diesel) of my vehicles plus lawn mower (larger commercial type), generator, and pressure washer. It makes me feel good.

If you have to ask why I drive a Diesel, then you will never understand.

BBAHHAHAAHAAH...I am always out of blinker fluid so I just stopped using my blinker all together.

There is no harm in using synthetic oil, just no real benefit. These threads are full of junk science and just plain foolishness.

#1. There is NO reason anymore to wait to change to synthetics, heck some cars come with it from the factory. Just and old wives tale from the early days of Mobile One

#2. You cannot extend oil change intervals because you switch to synthetic oil. Both oils far outlast the change intervals, you change it because it gets dirty. The reason we can keep oil in our vehicles longer now-a-days is that engines run a lot cleaner.

#3. Folks that use synthetic oil and test it to use it longer could just as easily do that with dino oil. Industry does it all the time.

#4 The folks who swear by synthetic oil are not bad people, they just want to feel they are doing something to protect thier baby. I use only synthetic in my Harley. No logical reason, just feels better.

I thought that the Allison transmission came with synthetic. Isn't Dextron 6 synthetic?

Is there CJ-4 compliant oil that is NOT synthetic? My internets search only comes up with Mobil 1, Rotella and AMSOil.
