My wife and I are flying out to San Fransisco then heading over to Reno,NV and finally down to San Diego and back up the coast to Los Angeles where we will catch our flight back home, anyways we want to visit Yosemite,NP before heading down to Diego and it looks like taking 395 South out of Reno then hitting 120 West into the Yosemite is the best way to go. Can anyone tell me if this is a good way? and are there places to spend the night along the way or inside the park.

Yes, this is a good road and a beautiful drive. We were in our TT, so not sure about hotels but I do recall seeing a few.

Bridgeport is another place to stay near the 120 turn off. Plus you can take a ride up into the Twin Lakes area and see Sawtooth and Matterhorn Peak, which is actually the NorthEast corner of Yosemite. Also think of taking the raod to Bodie off of 395 between Bridgeport and Lee Vining, well worth the side trip. Bodie is an old gold mining down that is a State Park now, they describe it as being in "arrested decay", which is actually very well preserved.

We took 395 last August and stopped by Bodie and Mono Lake. We had a great time. Mammoth Lakes is also a nice place. One lodge we stayed at is called Meadowcliff lodge. It is close to Walker,California and not too far from Topaz Lake,Nevada. Tioga pass can get steep at times but is a beautiful drive. Have fun!

What time of year do you plan this trip?

In October, highway 120 can be covered with several feet of snow, and the snowplows don't show up until mid June.

The road is very steep, but in a rental car that is fine. With a RV, you better know how to drive it in steep mountains, OR your brakes will quickly overheat if you don't downshift when going down the mountains.

Even the rental car should be out of overdrive when decending a hill where you need to use the brakes to control your speed. Shifting to D or 3 will slow you a little bit, but if the curves are restricted to around 40 or less, then shifting to 2 can further assist in slowing the car without overheating the brakes.

We love the area and keep returning. We parked the TT at Topaz Lodge RV Park and did Bodie etc. Surprised at the number of tourists from Europe.
How is the food at Meadowcliff?

Meadowcliff has one restaurant on their property. We had breakfast there and it was very good but it was a typical coffee shop nothing fancy. The employees are very friendly.
