I guess I'm just out of the loop, but I didn't realize there were districts that still used corporal punishment. I'm sure the topic of "to spank or not to spank" at home is generally split even, but I find it hard to believe that a large percentage would find it ok for a school employee to do so. Anyhow, here's the article that got my attention.

My kids will go to a school that practices corporal punishment if i can do anything about it. If we can't find a private school that will, I know the homeschool teacher under this roof will.

I got lickings at school when I was in Pre-K through first grade. . . I think they were great for me. My dad didn't sue the school, either. He read the slip of paper, saw how many they gave me, and doubled it when we got home.

As long as they have the witness to make sure the teacher doesn't go too far, I think it's good. If the parents supported them with discipline at home, maybe the kids could behave themselves. You might even see a few of them get "fixed" so that they don't need ADHD medicine.

Feel free to disagree. . . not trying to sway any opinions, just voicing mine.

Mrs. Robinson...being the class clown, I had met my match....best school teacher I ever had. I was doing my schtick and she told me to wipe that smile off of my face so I took my hand, ran it down my face and when it passed my mouth, I was frowning, 1 swat with her 12 inch ruler and learned more from that woman than most of the others combined, it took her about 1/2 hour on the very first day of school to get my attention and I never lost it.

Yeah we know how well beating kids works. Must not happen at home enough so let's allow the schools do it too. My most glorious mmoments growing up as a kid were the beatings I got from parents and teachers alike!
It's funny though, all of those memories of spankings and beatings with hangers, belts and even a baseball bat once seem to out number all the good times that my parents say happened.
I think I'll talk with my kids before I even think about swinging at them. Couldn't hurt to try. And by doing so maybe they will remember the trips to the lakes and mountains rather than the pain of punishments.

Smacking a kid should not ever be necessary. However, if it is necessary it should be used as a very last resort. That seems to be with students that come from families that never discipline their children. The truly hard cases sometimes only respond to pain.

I'm sorry about what you went through, racefan1965. Unfortunately, people pervert all sorts of things to be tools of abuse or other crimes. These people are criminals.

I don't think anybody who is pro-corporal punishment would support beatings or abuse. The ones who are abusive also might abuse things like time-out by locking their kids in closets and doing other atrocities. IMO, spankings are completely different from beatings. Spankings should not be given out of anger, without discussing the violation with the child, or without a witness to make sure it is administered properly.

Again, I hope you see the distinction and know what my original post is advocating and what it is not advocating. Like I said, I would never say that somebody must use corporal punishment, but I expect the same respect in return. (Not directed at you, just a general statement.)

I had many lickings, some severe when I was a kid, my cousin who lived with my parents told me the first was the day I came home after being born because I was crying.

I swore I would never lay a hand on my kids and never did, nor did their mother.
All three are well rounded sucessful adults.

I have never understood why if you clout your neighbor, you will go to jail, as long as your kid does not land in the hospital, you can beat on them all day long.

I agree 100%. Well said.

I got one spanking (actually, a few slaps on the hand with a ruler) in second grade. I absolutely did not deserve it. She was a nutjob of a teacher who thought she knew who was talking behind her back. It wasn't me, it was the boy beside me. To this day I can still remember how powerless, outraged and ashamed I felt.

That one incident convinced me that no teacher would ever strike my child for any reason whatsoever.
