Has anyone been up to Cave Lake SP outside of Ely this season? How were things looking up there? Thinking of stopping over late next month instead of the KOA.
Also,any comments on Rye Patch SRA outside of Lovelock?

Not much info, but I've heard a couple guys say Cave Lakes been pretty crowded.

Rye Patch is for sun lovers, no shade or hookups. Have not been to Cave Lakes this season, shade there but no hookups like all NV state parks.

Thanks,guys. Both have hot showers and flush toilets so the lack of hookups is not a concern to us. By late Sept I suppose there won't be too many others there. Sounds like both would be good stopover spots as we head to California.
We stopped at Cave Lake SP in both directions on our trip to CA this summer. It's crowded on the weekend with locals coming up to get out of the heat, but in the middle of the week you'll have your choice of several campsites. Lake View is preferred because of it's proximity to the lake, but Elk Flat is good if you like privacy and quiet. A whole lot nicer than the KOA, which seemed to be at least partially filled with full time residents (with the price of gold and silver, mining is on the up swing again).
We attempted to stop by Cave Lake on a Thursday and both campgrounds were full. Looks like a nice campground, a nice amount of room between sites, etc. When heading to the lakeview campground, make sure you pay carefull attention for the turnoff sign...the road goes up to the right. Don't continue up the hill once you hit the gravel road like we did HERE

If you're in the Ely area, I'd recommend Great Basin National Park, had a wonderful(*) stopover there on the way back to California back in July 2006. Granted, no hookups, but the campsites on Mt Wheeler (Wheeler Peak Campground) are spectacular, with creeks, and being up at 9,886 feet, very cool alpine camping, even when the desert below is blistering. A tour of the Lehman caves is well worth it too.
There's a trailer limit of 24', which happened to be the size of Class C we were driving. Didn't recall the drive to be all that challenging at all, easier than Trail Ridge Road at RMNP.
* - As I said, the campsite was wonderful, but I was a bit careless with my axe and almost chopped off my left thumb. That said, I highly recommend the ER at Ely as well. :-)
Hum, we also stayed at Rye Patch (below the dam) on our way out across Nevada in 2006, was a late night stop over on our way east, it's quite barren, nothing I'd want to stay at for multiple evenings. Now, Wheeler Peak, I could stay there for a week.
