Just in the past few days, my Toshiba laptop running XP, on occasion refuses to shut down. Using either the normal Start>Turn Off Computer>Turn Off method or holding the power button, it will shut down and then immediately re-start, as if I had hit the Restart button (which I didn't). It doesn't do it every time, but frequently. Any ideas?

A virus is a good possibility - have you updates your virus software and scanned lately? It sounds like something is running in the background that's keeping it from operating normally. Using a spyware program scan might also be worthwhile (some good freebies are the one on Yahoo and Spybot Serach & Destroy). You could also check your registry for something strange that you didn't put there. A good (free) registry cleaner is Easy Cleaner. If your problem was the opposite (shutting down and restarting without you trying), it would be the cooling fan.

I had the same problem....my laptop would not shut down. I unplugged it, hit buttons...then carried it into my computer store. All they did was turn it over and unplug the battery...it shut right down and rebooted. I felt so stupid..my first laptop, never thought it had a battery keeping power to it.

Remove the battery for a couple of minutes and that should take care of this problem. Have had to do it to my Dell a couple times over the years.

I find this happens every once in a while after I install new software or make significant updates. I find unplugging and removing the battery does the trick. Once I had to reboot in safe mode before it would run correctly. It wasn't spyware or a virus, it was just the Dell.

Try shutting it down using the Control-Alt-Delete Task manager shutdown.

Thanks for the follow up. It really helps when the solution is confirmed in the thread.

Mine had it happen once.....Just pressed the on button down and in a few moments it shut down.......
Fired it back up and all seemed well....Ran the "CHKDSK /f" check disk program and rebooted with no more problems...
