We are currently on I-40 in Oklahoma & headed to Las Vegas. Would really like to see Monument Valley. What would be the best route from I-40 to Goulding's & return to I-40 without backtracking? Also, any problems with gas, etc.? Traveling in a 30' fifth with 1 dog. Any advice or tips will be very welcome Thanks; Mike M.

Get off I-40 in Gallup, take route 264 to route 191. Go north to route 160. West to Kayenta and north to MV. On 264, you'll want to stop at Window Rock, a sacred Navajo place. On 191, stop at Canyon de Chelly (a day or two is warranted).

Leaving MV, south on rte 160 to rte 98, north to Page, rte 89 to Kanab, then south to Fredonia. Rte 389/59 to Hurricane, rte 9 to I-15, south to Sin City.

You could also go south back to I-40 to rte 93 to LV. I prefer the scenery going through southern Utah.

Bear in mind, there are dozens of scenic attractions along the route I've described, almost all of them better than LV.

If you're going through Kayenta, stop at the Burger King and see the rather nifty Code Talkers museum.

And hey now, Las Vegas has gorgeous scenery. Don't forget Mt. Charleston, Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead and Valley of Fire!

sparker1 has it right. That is the route we use all the time. I-40 is the pits.
