I was looking to spend close to a week in the Rapid City area from Sunday, June 27 till Monday, July 5th. That way I would be in the Mt Rushmore area over the Fourth of July. I am sure they will have some sort of fireworks or special events planned for that time. There is a lot to see and do in the Rapid City area as well as just relaxing and enjoying the beautiful scenery.
There are several nice campgrounds in the area. Rafter J Bar Ranch is one of them as well as the KOA in Hill City. If anyone has another in mind let me know and I will check it out.
A week out there will give you time to see:
Mt. Rushmore
Crazyhorse
Pigtail Bridges & Needles Highway
Custer State Park
Badlands National Park
Wall Drug
Minuteman Missle National Historic Site
Devils Tower
Deadwood
1880 Train Tour in Hill City and Keystone
and whatever else you might be interested in experiencing.
Once I have an idea of how many of you think you may want to go, I will contact the campground of choice and start setting things up. I will then start a seperate thread so we can plan accordingly.
My plan as of now is to take a leisurely drive out stopping along the way to do some sightseeing, spend the week out in Rapid City area, and then head back the northern route through Minniapolis/St. Paul and the UP of Michigan. One stop in Michigan would be at Pictured Rock National Seashore and the Mackinaw City area.
PM me and let me know what you think. We have time to tweek things as needed, but I think the week of June 27th thru July 4th would be a great time to be in Rapid City.
Mark you calendars and start saving the $$ to pay for the petrol. It will be a fun time and one you will always remember.
I would like to say we're in but it's just a little too early to say for sure. You have a mileage estimate?

I ran a rough estimate of the trip through Good Sam's trip planner and came up with 2900 miles and about 51 hours of driving. (that's about 6.5, 8 hour days) That includes a trip to Iowa where Winnebago's are built. Gotta do the factory tour. For our rig that's about 425 gals, @ $3.00/gal, that's $1275 for gas. Not that I'm excited about it....
Dan, sounds like a nice trip. Too far off for us to plan now but the Metro Park's tax levy and the Canal Winchester School tax levy passed so we have jobs for awhile.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a broken fan belt and leaky tire.....
Well it is a bit early, but if you don't put it out there now, people will plan things and then say, "Darn, wish I would have know. I would have loved to have gone!"
Steve, no millage estimate for now as I have not figured out the entire trip yet. Looking at the timetable, I may do Mackinaw and the UP of Michigan first and then head over to Rapid City. Would make it a bit more relaxing out that way.
Again the nice part about this is that if some wanted to caravan together, great, and if others wanted to explore on their own, that would be good to. If we planned a week in the Rapid City area with some special events, we could do so, and enjoy the company and sights.
If your interested, put it on your possible to do list and see how things go. I have blocked out the time on my calendar for next year with the intent to go, and hope some of you can join in.

Steve: I just punched in a possible route in Delorme Street Atlas and it came up with 2,963 miles. Not bad considering my last trip out that way was over 5,000. This will be just like a little trip to the park. LOL!
