We'll be heading to Tx. soon and would like to know ahead of time if there are any cities to avoid on I-35 because of construction or traffic problems. Friends told us about a bad stretch in DFW that is bad and should be bypassed. Any bad spot you could let us know about and the best highway around would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Elmer,
Good idea,,,except there really is no way that I know of to bypass any of the cities without going miles & miles out of the way, & then you never know what you're gonna find anyway. We are also leaving from Wisconsin right after Xmas. Where are you from & where are you going?? We.re from near Prairie Du Chien, going to Pharr, Tx.

I just drove to Topeka from Mission, TX yesterday and didn't see anything to avoid on I 35. Just be sure to use 35W not 35E around Dallas, less congestion.

Yep, most definitely, from one who lives in the Dallas Fort Worth area, if you're coming from the North, do take I35 West instead of I35 East. You'll definitely have a smoother drive with much less traffic.

I Go East AROUND Kansas City on I-435. Tempting to save a few miles and go thru the middle. Don't. I go K.C. to Joplin on 71 then Muskogee, McAlester, Sherman TX etc. on 69 then around East side of Dallas. It's 4-lane. But staying strictly on I-35 makes sign-hunting easier I suppose. TOM

If coming to the Rio Grande Valley.
Take 435 around Kansas City. Take 35W thru Fort Worth, do not go thru Dallas.
At Waco get on US 77 to avoid both Austin & San Antonio. Take 77 to Riviera, at Riveria cut across to Falfurrias to US 281. Presto, you are here. If going to the Brownsville or Harlingen area just stay on 77. This is the route we like best. Truck traffic is very heavy from Waco to San Antonio & we like to avoid it. Traffic standstills common at Austin.

I would use this this route for Port Aransas too, at Victoria cut over to US 35 on 87 or 185 or further south on 239.

I arrived in the RGV a few days ago from Wisconsin. I drove my truck and trailer first time to RGV by way of I 35. I didn't think it was bad at all. I hit every big city at rush hour. I expected a lot worse. If I can do it anyone can. My GPS was GREAT. Best thing I ever bought.
