OK, this is weird .... each and every time we have been to the campground (we keep our RV there) and sat around a campfire, early the next morning ( we're talking 4 am here ) I wake up with a headache .... If no campfire, no headache !
Tried different types of wood, from pine to cedar and it does not seem to make a difference .... strange !
I know it seems crazy but I have been through it several times and there is no doubt that it is the campfire that is causing these ... a real bummer since we all love a good fire and sitting around shooting the bull
Guess I just get to be the stick in the mud !
OK, I've ranted enough ...

We have a small propane portable "campfire" what we use when real campfires are not allowed. I LOVE a real fire, smoke and all but often the fire dangers are so high, open fires are not allowed. This campfire gives the sense of a campfire, not much heat, but does draw folks to sit and visit. Is a substitute and might be an option for you. If I sit close, I do feel heat but not that great toasty feel of a campfire. Might work for you..............better than a campfire video!!

We have a friend with the same problem. It's an allergy to the smoke. She takes an antihistamine before bed and found that it works VERY well! Hope it helps!

if I'm sitting around the campfire I usually have a couple of beers during the course of the evening....and a headache in the morning!!!!

I personally love the smell of a campfire, but it does wreck havoc with my sinuses. You could very well be "allergic"....does cigarette smoke bother you?

You may also find that the light of the fire causes the problems. I know of welders who get a bit of welding "flash" without the protective hood glass, and wake up in the middle of the night with headaches.....something about the optic nerve or something....usually gone within 12 hours.
This may sound strange, but try wearing sunglasses, or avoid looking at the fire.

Hey, it's worth a try?

Good Luck!

Agree with Snowhawkwoman. When the fire is lit, the scotch is pouring. The rest is history.

I have the same problem and take an antihistamine before bed and feel good the next day. The campfire is one of the best parts of camping, beer, bull and good friends make life good.

"welding "flash" without the protective hood glass, and wake up in the middle of the night with headaches.....something about the optic nerve or something....usually gone within 12 hours." Not! The problem is from the UV and intense light of the welding arc. Look at it without protection and it burns the retina just like looking into the sun.

The emissions from smoke contains all types of by products that cause some individuals more problems than others. It could even be from using lighter fluid to start the fire. As someone suggested are you alergic to cigaret smoke?

Hope you figure it out because the most enjoyable of camping experiences is as you said sitting around the campfire. Keep trying and good luck!

I'm asthmatic and typically use an inhaler before lighting our campfires. I've found if I just try to 'grin & bear it' without medication, I end up wheezing, coughing and will often get a headache. I've often found that too much wine around the campfire can contribute to the problem also.

Thanks all .... interesting ideas, especially the one about the light from the fire, however I have a gas fireplace on my deck at the house and it does not bother me at all .... And, no cigarette smoke is, definitley, not the problem !
Just for the fun of it, and, possibly an alternative, I'm going to try the fake logs to see if that might make a difference... what the heck just a headache - LOL and we love a good campfire, especially this time of year
