It is time to replace the two tank LP pigtail hoses and the main low pressure hose leading from a Marshall auto changing LP two stage regulator to the trailer gas line.
Do the pigtail hoses need to be sealed with teflon tape or LP pipe dope where they screw into the regulator? I think I read somewhere that these are flared fittings(?) and no tape or dope should be used. I do not know much about pipe fittings, etc, so any background info would be helpful.
The main rubber line that goes from the regulator to the trailer gas steel pipe line has a round nut that appears to be sealed with pipe dope. Is it correct to seal this hose connector?
I have also seen comments that white teflon tape is for water fittings and yellow is for gas fittings, and that there is one kind pipe dope for water and another for gas. Could you please tell me how these differ, and what is the down side of using white teflon or water pipe dope on a gas fitting.
Thanks for your help.

you do not need any thing for sealing, just make sure fittings are tight

Play it safe and use the proper stuff for this seal. I used the LP gas seal dope and it has not leaked at all in the 2+ years since. They also make a special type of tape for LP fittings. I know that the white teflon tape used for pluming is not what you should use but I'm sure that someone will post with the right info on what type of tape can be used. It will only cost you a couple bucks more to use the right stuff and since LP can go BOOM, it's worth it.

Typical LP hoses have a pipe threaded fitting on one end, and a SAE flare fitting on the other end.
Use NO SEALANT on compression-type fittings. (SAE flare, for example)
Use sealant on pipe threaded fittings. The best choice is liquid teflon sealant. (in flexible tubes, from auto supply stores) There is also a special tape sealant for LP. Do NOT use common white teflon tape. It shreds when the fitting is tightened, thereby introducing particles of tape into the LP system which can plug orifices and regulators.

The proper "stuff" is torque only. NEVER use sealant on compression or flare fittings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pipe threads require the use of LP rated pipe dope or teflon tape.
Flared fittings do not need and should not have any dope or teflon tape. Tighten, not too tight and you are done.

YES, YOU DO!!!
Unless the fittings are flared, you MUST use either tape or dope. I prefer to use pipe dope.

Brass to Brass.. Or black Iron.. Black Iron you use the proper pipe dope
Brass to Brass.... Well brass is a softer metal than iron so it's supposed to seal without pipe dope but... I seriously doubt it would hurt.

I replaced mine this year and even on the compression fittings I ended up having to use the tape to get a good seal.

This is the label that came on the new pigtails that I installed on my FW. You can just torque it down if you want or you can follow the instructions that come with the pigtail.
