Well I take several issues with this article and I also would like to point out the large number of people even on this forum who are very satisfied with their magic jack service. I recently bought one for my parents who live in Beijing, China and I can now call them on a local US phone number. Call quality is very good. Here are some items from the article:

There is no Un install for this program. Even if you stop using it, it gathers your information.

You are put under high pressure to sign up and pay for 5 years.

There is no written warranty on the box. It breaks, you buy another to maintain your service.

Computer must be left on to make or receive calls.

Pop up window comes to front of screen anytime there is a call in or out call.

MajicJack Spyware slows down your computer even when you are not using MagicJack

First off, on a Mac there really isn't much of an install and nothing actually runs when the Magic Jack is not up.

What service doesn't pressure you to make a longer commitment? Have you talked to YOUR phone company lately? And the 5 year price is really good - hope they don't go under.

It costs $39.99 - I don't usually expect much warranty for such purchases.

Computer must be left on to make or receive calls - this is obvious. Unlike some VOIP solutions, this one uses your computer to connect to the internet so DUH, your computer must be on!

Pop up window comes to front of screen anytime there is a call in or out call - is this really that bad? Don't you want to see the caller ID when you get a call?

MajicJack Spyware slows down your computer even when you are not using MagicJack - again, nothing runs on a Mac - and I have not heard this complaint from any windows users. This is really simple though, just look at your running services to make sure it closed out.

I have been using MJ for a few months and have had only one problem with it and it was resolved. For some reason, incoming calls could hear me but there was "dead" air coming from the other end. We got that fixed.

Look, you pay so little for MJ that if it doesn't work to your satisfaction, just throw it away. We certainly are generally happy with it and our one problem was fixable.

VoiP can be a crap-shoot anyway. Now, I'm just waiting until Google Voice starts up. That sounds pretty promising.

I use a blocking program that blocks that pop up window.........my daughter uses the MJ a lot and the blocker progam keeps me from seeing the window.........I don't even know the MJ is there.......great service!

I got one of the first ones out, after a few weeks my account got mixed up with info from an account in another state. They had to close out the account on that one which made the unit null and void but they sent me two new ones at no cost. Sent one to my brother in the Virgin island and kept one, no problems with either one.

True, but all you have to do is search out the program files and delete them.

No problems on my PC (2.53 GHz w/ 2GB RAM)

I stopped using mine about 2 months ago - no problems so far, I just don't plug it in. The software only starts if the MJ is plugged in to the USB. I've looked at every process running on my PC - nothing related to MJ.

I forwarded the MJ number (local back home in NC) to our new number in TX so our familes could call us wih no long distance charges. For me, it's worth the price just for that.

I if I were tempted to use MJ I'd just get a small El-cheapo laptop or micro tower and set it up with the basic package that it comes with and plug in the MJ

I'd never do anything else with that machine save turn it on and off

I could log it into my router on Wi-Fi and thus isolate it from everything else on my network save the internet connection itself.

That said. I have something a review article I recently read says don't exist, A SKYPE hard phone
