I 'volunteer' for the Safety Committee. I have the priveledge of paying $50.00 per year HSLR dues and $25.00 per year for safety committee. And I am obligated to work 4 12 hour shifts, minimum.
Yes all prices are very high. The vendors have a very high fee to place their booth - they must make a profit to be able to come back. I have been told that the food vendors in the premium spots pay an entry fee of $25,000+ and also a percentage of gross sales to HSLR.
Just today, the attendance figures were released - a record 1.89 million paid visitors.
As a paramedic I see all sorts of minor problems. They are all treated free. The stadium does have free water fountains - just bring your own bottle and refill (we do).
The upside to all of this is that the HSLR is completely designed to make money - massive amounts of money. After expenses the HSLR provides educational scholarships to many thousands of kids to study in all areas. They have given more than $235,000,000.00 in scholarships.

As DebDav has said, the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is all about making money....as is the Reliant Park & Arena.
Of course, once you serve on the committee and put in your 12 hour days and donate your money, you get to wear one of those cool vests!

I guess there were no drinking fountains in any of the buildings.
How did the world exist before everyone carried a water bottle around, sucking on it incessantly, anyway?! LMAO!
I have a sweet tender nature, however I enjoy sharing my thoughts and opinions.

Gee, remember when people used to wish for a car that would run on water?

This is a n area where we can decide to support or not support the cost. Evidently the costs were within what you would pay for that entertainment. To go or not is a choice and to buy a bottle of water and several milks is another choice. I feel your pain so much that I quit going to these type events. That is the choice3 I made. I can now rant and rave about those prices because I refuse to support them. But thats just me.

Yeah it is everywhere. I pay taxes to build roads and highways. Now they turn them into tollways and want me to pay more to use what I paid to have built.
I hope the businesses on the other end of that road know why I don't use them anymore.

Went to the Alameda Co. Fair. They had a large beer consession set up. It was a hot day with plenty of thirsty people but no one was buying. They wanted $6 for a cup of beer that I estimate to be about 9oz. This means that a case of 24x120z. beer would bring in $122.
This sure looks like greed to me. I guess the vendor went home that day with little or no money. Out in the Arizona desert I paid $1.25 for a Bud Lite in the can and $3 for a barbqued hamburger and they had a country band playing. The Alameda Co. Fair can kiss me where the sun don't shine.

Do they have water fountains there? Yes, a few in the inside of the buildings but alot of the times we're out side. Getting around Reliant Center isn't like walking around the block, its like walking around a small town.
I don't think we're suppose to take anything in although the second day we did take some water in the baby stroller, they never looked.
I have no problems paying the high prices as I have every year for many many years IF it truly goes to the HLSR but I"m wondering how much of it lines the pockets of the HCHSA and Bob Mcnair.
I have often wondered how much of the water sales goes back to Coke (Dasani) and how much of it goes to the HLSR or the HCHSA. Like I said if it goes to the HLSR I"m ok with the prices but if its going else where, to for profit groups and part of the stadium was paid for with public money, I have an issue with that.
No different than paying gas tax then paying to drive on a toll road.
I remember way back when they build the Sam Houston bridge across the ship channel, the approved the money then put it into junk bonds way back in the '80's and lost all the money some how. The bridge ended up costed twice the amount and they way the governement looks at it, oh well, we'll just raise taxes. OK I"ll stop before I"m branded and kicked off the board.
