We are fortunate down here to have some great beach state parks for $25--30 a night. It just doesn't get any better. I make sure it is cheaper to camp.
Last year our 8 night vacation to Surf City Campground. Including gas there and back. Was a grand total of $600.00. Gas was in fact more than the site. We don''t count food. Because, We eat weather we are camping or at home. So can't count it in the vacation. We eat out more at home.
Eric. Think about how much more that two week $2500.00 beach trip would have cost if you had, had to pay $2500.00 per week for a place to stay. So instead of paying $7500.00 for 2 weeks. You only had to pay $2500.00
Terry, I certainly can understand what you are saying and I would not be the one to lay out $2500 per week for a condo. However many do and the difference is they haven't spent $000k's on rv equipment.
Actually we also keep a seasonal site in the NY Adirondacks which as a repeat 'renter' costs us less than $1000 US a season (all utilities included). In the camping season that's were we'll keep our MH so I don't have to pay the storage fees near home.
Last year all of our trips were out of our site and we also spent 2-weeks vacation right there on our site. I'm sure we did not spend more than $300 during that vacation, most of which would have been visiting restaurants in the region. The NY Adirondacks are a beautiful place to camp.
... Eric
I fully understand them not having paid for a RV. But I really don't understand how they can afford $2500 + per week for a room . In only 6, week long trips to the beach. I have saved over the condo next door. More than $15,000. Which is more than my TT cost. That does not take into account the numeros trips to the mountains, saving $100 + per night, or the trips to Charleston saving Even more.
In fact. If we did not camp. We could not take a week long trip to the beach in July, We could not go to Charleston, and we could not run up to the mountains when ever we wanted to. Sadly. I don't make the kind of money, that allows for vacation travel with out a RV. I do undestand what Skip was saying about traveling, and only stopping for one nioght at a time though.
and truthfully. Until I tried to get a place to take mom. I really didn't understand how much I was saving. Cause I'm telling you $750. for 3 nights in the OFF season is ridiculous. But then. I realize that many of the condo crowd. Share the cost with 2 or even 3 other families.
I bet your mountains are great. I hope to be able to get up there sometime. When I do. You'll have to tell us some places to see.
Terry
Do you know what they do on those bed spreads in those condos and hotel rooms??????? Sure take the bed spread off, but it was still on the bed you are gonna lay your head. Same with the pillows. What kind of fungus was in the ear of the last person to lay their head on the pillow you are gonna bury your face in. My TT's bed is far more comfortable then any hotel/condo bed anyways. So, do I save money camping where I go? I really think I save a bundle. Do I care? Nope, I got my own bed and blankie with me.

I stay in my trailer anywhere I go… even when we visit family where I know the room and beds are clean, and free… I do it because to me it is home and I am home everywhere I want to be…
steelpony5555 you said it! That is exactly why I quit staying at hotels, motels and such. My friends kid me about the "Princess Motorhome". When we first got our new motorhome I went about furnishing it with Ralph Lauren sheets and towels, decorator pillows, nice plastic wine glasses and so on. I never have to worry who slept in the bed before me. That is worth it for me.

I think perhaps some women reject "camping" for one simple reason: it's the same as staying home except without the household aids. From what I've seen in lots of campgrounds, women wind up doing the cooking, washing dishes, cleaning the rugs, floors, tidying up after the kids go swimming or boating, putting wet clothes out to dry, etc. And, for the most part they don't have a dishwasher, clothes washer, heavy duty vacuum cleaner, etc. to help them out. So why would they want to leave their nice comfy home to go "rough it?" Meanwhile, if the men want to go, let them! Gives mom a break!

My wife & I are just starting out camping in a TT. The kids are too old to want to go. Matter of fact, DW was THE REASON we got a TT. I was dead-set AGAINST it for years. We pretty much share the cooking responsibilities at home, but when camping, I do most of it because most of it is done outside. She does most of the "sweeping up" and stuff, mostly because she's a neat-freak. Other than me doing all the "man stuff" like driving, setting up & breaking camp, etc, we pretty much share the load. And to be honest, it's much less of a "load" or hassle than I thought it would be.
Bottom line: This camping stuff was all DW's idea. She'd go every weekend if we could swing it. I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. It makes her happy and I like seeing her happy. That makes ME happy.
Not to rain on everybody's "I like my own clean bed" parade, because I do, to an extent, agree with it, but apparently NONE of you people EVER use facilities at a campground (shower, toilets, etc.), nor do you ever use public restroom facilities of any type, or ever eat in restaurants. Think about it. We've got exposure EVERYWHERE, and if you find a way to totally avoid it, there are plenty of us that would like to hear the solution.
