I'd like to explore this area in July. Any suggestions? Places to stay and things to see? Traveling with a 10 and 13 y/o.

We like Camp Hatteras Campground in Rodanthe.

Take a climb to the top of the Cape Hatteas lighthouse.

Jump on the ferry and take a ride over to Ocracoke Isand.

The grandson likes monster trucks, so when we where coming down Highway 158, north of Kill Devil Hills, we stopped at Dennis Anderson's shop ((Home of the Grave Digger monster truck) and had a look around. Every once in awhile, Dennis comes down to the store and signs autographs.

we figured out why the wright brothers built in ohio but came here to fly; the wind never ever stops. it's a beautiful area but we just got tired of being sand blasted. we recommend the rodanthe campground too.

We stayed at Camp Hatteras last year. We left before our reservation ended. They are the rudest campground I have ever been in. I wouldn't tell my worst enemy to stay there. They claim to be the best resort campground in the east and I have stayed at better state parks. Example: their wifi is terrible. I complained. They said, "steal the wifi from the KOA next door, their's is better!!!" I'm not kidding that's what they said. You pay a stiff price for the campsite and then pay extra for everything else they have.

Go with the National Park campgrounds. Great location; great price.

A quarter mile down the road past the KOA and Camp Hatteras is Ocean Waves Campground which is much smaller at only 68 campsites, cost HALF as much, and difficult to get reservations at, but a nice place to stay (and their FREE WiFi works great)... Since I discovered this campground I have not been back to Camp Hatteras...

Going over the 4th and staying at Ocean Waves. With your 10 and 13, I would recommend the Last Colony production on Roanoke Island as well as the aquarium which both can be done on the same day. Did this with two 11y/o girls who enjoyed both. I would also climb the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and go to Ocracoke Island. Other than that, I would sit back and enjoy the excellent relaxation that only the Outer Banks can provide. Enjoy the trip.

Another vote for Ocean Waves!

As far as what to do - there is lot, but it's spreadout. That's the nice thing about OW, it's pretty much in the middle. 20 min N and you're in Nags Head - 20 min S and you're in Hatteras.
