She and they were totaly beyond the pale. If it were me I would just write them a polite letter and explain why I and or anyone I could tell about them would not do business with them. JMHO

I would charge the store and the store owner with theft and make him produce a video tape of the transaction showing his clerk in custody and control of your $100.00 bill from the time it was vended to her until she returned. Still even that does not account for what happened to the bill which, I gather, was never returned to you.
You have been robbed man--what difference is this than if they had picked your pocket????
Having run into a similar situtation with a $100 bill, i'm with you on this one.
I had gone to the bank cashed a check and was handed part of the amount in $100 bills. Off I go to do my shopping, this was a Saturday morning. The place I tried to use one of the bill marked it then ran it through a scanner to check it, they do mostly cash business so they have one. Anyways I hurry back to town and go strait to the bank. Tell the girl the situations, same girl who gave them to me, she did exchange it, but I found out later that according to the bank it was real. Beats me what the problem at the store was. I imagine she got in trouble to, I know they are not suppose to exchange but confiscate.
In your case this girl said not a word to you, then she comes back and says she can't take it. If anything she should have called the police to report your for trying to pass a bad bill. Chances are she screwed up and took a bad bill, they chose you to try and get themselves out of the losses. Stick to your guns, I would not take the loss and think it was nice of you to offer to split the difference so you both would not have to take a total loss. One more thing if he took nothing, did you get your stuff and did he keep the bill? Maybe i'm just being dence.
I think I would have to agree with another poster you should file a report with the police in your town, that way the whole incident is on record. Wouldn't hurt to email the company headquarters either.
Actions taken soon are way better than waiting a few days, especially regarding your witnesses. I do hope you have contact information at the very least for them.
Their (the witnesses) statements could be crucial here, and the sooner police interview them, the better.
I can totally relate to your story...
I had something similar happen to me about 10 years ago. My ex and I had filed a joint income tax return, when the money came back, we both signed the check, and my ex went to the bank, cashed the check. Drove back to me at my office, handed me my share of the money. When I got off of work, I drove to my bank, and deposited the cash. About a week later...I receive a letter from the bank saying that I had deposited a counterfiet $100 bill!!!! I was flabbergasted!! First of all, I put the money in thru the night deposit box, not at a teller. When they collect the money in the morning, it all goes in a pile...how do I know or does anyone know if it was from my envelope? Nothing I said mattered. The next day I got a call from a SECRET SERVICE Agent!! Seems counterfiet money is a federal offense (duh!) and he was calling to investigate this so called $100 bill. I explained everthing, and he grilled me about everything in my life! he asked whether I thought my ex would do this to me on purpose, or if I knew if he was involved in drugs...just a bunch of crap! We are a normal, middle class family that just went to a bank and deposited money in good faith!! If I was going to conterfiet money...why would I deposit it in my own account? Well, after a couple more calls, and a visit to my work for more questioning,..they concluded that I was not a national threat...(LOL) and told me that unfortunately, these things happen because the real thieves are out there and it slips by at times.. To a bank? why didn't the bank that gave out the bill catch it? It never made any sense, and the matter was dropped, but my bank deducted $100 from my account! I was out $100 for nothing! It's amazing how you can be made to feel guilty when you are innocent and have done nothing wrong. Its really scary.

Thanks all. For clarity I bought $32 worth of stuff, they took the $100 and gave me $68 back. I am not out of any money, just my good name, since my info was on the invoice. I just did not like the way it went down and think it is bogus that the bill left my sight, for ten minutes no less.

All I can say is wow! Oh and thats the reason I offered to split the difference, less hassle. But my witnesses are lined up so.......
Whether or not the bill was good or bad, it certainly was handled improperly. If the bill was suspected to be no good, the cashier should have called for the manager to come an verify in without leaving her position. Under the circumstances I would not have been happy either. Seems like the actions of a poorly trained employee, a store without an appropriate action plan for these occurrances or a thief for a cashier. I suspect one of the first two as I am not sure that the cashier was smart enough to come up with such a scheme on her own and where would she get a bad bill to switch with yours anyway.
Another thought on this came to mind.....are you SURE it was the manager that called you???? It still smells of a scam to me. And since it's a major chain, you might call the head office and ask them how they handle situations like this. They may not be too happy to hear your story.

I think I am going to start dealing in fifty and twenty dollar bills, after reading losing $100 bills arbitrarily. That's scary stuff. Who can you trust? No one. I've got cash money on hand (don't ask where ) I've had for over a decade (yes $100s & $50s) and am wondering if they are any good?
I have a sweet tender nature, however I enjoy sharing my thoughts and opinions.
