IMO I-5 is faster and smoother, 99 more services and more scenic. Not very scenic but more scenic.

I live in the area and personally I HATE 99 between Fresno and just north of Stockton. 2 lane road in many places (yes I-5 is two lane as well) but there are some crazy drivers including the truckers that will fly past you like you're standing still. Since there's so many on/off ramps as well you'll find you want to drive in the left lanes because people have no clue how to merge but driving in the left lane will get you some nasty stares even at 70 not to mention a few honks among other things. My advise.. I-5

My criteria is simple: food. I-5 has Harris Ranch and Anderson's Pea Soup.

Also, 99 seems to put more bugs on the windshield than I-5.

As previously mentioned, I-5 has much less merging traffic and is a more comfortable drive. But, as also previously mentioned it's pretty boring.

If you stay in the left lane, then I5 might be smooth....... the trucks have beat it to death....JMHO

Just drove both recently. 99 is beat up in some places ~ smooth in others - and really beat up in others. I-5 is ok in the left lane, but the right lane has some serious semi-truck damage.
