To bad that you can't see the interesting things to do there that make it a great place to visit. We lived in Maryland until a couple of years back and there and spent a lot of time downtown. Neat places to see include: The Americian Visionary Museum, The National Aquarium, The B&O Museum, Fort McHenry and eating crab cakes at Faidely's in the Lexington Market. Not to mention a Orioles game.
Just because there is some crime, just like every other city, not just in the US, is no reason to miss out on opportunites to learn and experience more then remaining secluded in a safe little haven. Be careful just as you should be in any city and enjoy.
I know Baltimore pretty well: my wife and I graduated from Univ. of Maryland, Baltimore. I worked at Johns Hopkins for a couple of years, and both my kids were born in the city.
It's a dump, much more so than most American cities.

To say Baltimore is much more of a dump than other cities indicates either a lack of knowledge about Baltimore, a lack of knowledge about other cities or an ax to grind. To imply visiting the Inner Harbor is some sort of dangerous activity is just plain silly. As the person above said, a city is a city. You just have to use common sense. For example, don't go to southeast D.C. at night, do go to the Mall in D.C. in the daytime. Enjoy yourself and see what you can see as you travel across this great land of ours. Or don't. Your choice.
