we recently bought a brand new love seat for our family room. For the first time ever, I made the mistake of buying a gorgeous leather love seat with a wood accent on the bottom. I loved it, bought it without thinking of the cats. I have two cats, inside only, one is 8 yrs old, the other 13.
We didnt have the loveseat more than one hour when one of the cats went running thru the house like a banshee, and ran across the seat, kicking her hind feet for traction behind her. Yup, one hour old, and scratches in the new leather seats. We tried covering it with a nice comforter thinking they wouldnt hurt the leather that way, no...they just did the push pull thingie they do on blankets and it went thru the blanket to the leather...more nail marks.
I am devastated. My husband is irate. We have tried to keep the cats off the seat when we see them on it, but today, when I got up this morning, I found in the corner of the leg, one of the cats had started using it as a scratch post. Deep scrapes on the wood and leather. I just cried. They seem to do it when we are not around or sleeping since we have never seen them do this or we would stop it.
They have one of those round thingies that has the cardboard scratcher in the middle, and the ball that they can play with on the outside of it, in the same room as the love seat.
Last year we bought a new chair, cloth, and they started on that. I placed a water bottle next to the leg, and it seemed to stop because they hate the water bottle. but I have to keep it there all the time.
We also have those two sided tapes stuck to all the edges of the furniture everywhere, most of the time it works, sometimes it doesnt.

Is there anything that will repel the cats from going near the new furniture? anything we can try? my husband says we will never buy anything new again as long as we have cats, and I refuse to get rid of my cats. I love them dearly, but hate the destruction they are doing to my home.
Has anyone tried aluminum foil? does it scare them off? I am at a loss of what to do next...they are destroying it when we are not looking.
HELP!

I realize that I will get wrath from some, but my rescue cat came from the pound, already spayed and declawed. She never goes outside so that is not a worry, but I have had furniture totally ruined by scratching and as far as I know declawing is the only sure fire way to prevent it. I wouldn't consider it for a cat that goes outside tho.

If they're inside cats have them declawed. They don't need claws indoors. If they're inside/outside cats, make them inside cats -- then have them declawed.

have you tried aluminum foil....cats HATE it....put a couple of long sheets across the sofa
there are also "scat mats" that have batteries and "screech" an awful sound if the cat (or dog) jumps up onto
and the old stand by.....water gun....or several water guns...one for you, one for DH......as soon as they are in mid leap...zap em with the water gun (water won't hurt the leather sofa...just wipe it off)....after a few squirts they are going to HATE your sofa

De clawing a cat is WRONG, NOT the answer, Before you declaw your cat go to your doctor and have him remove the last joint of all your toes and fingers.. Same thing.

The barbaric practice should be outlawed and any one who does it, put in jail for cruelty to animals.

If you can't handle your cats,, Whey the heck did you adopt them?

Wrong for you doesn't mean wrong for everyone. I don't believe it's barbaric, never will believe it, and I think your suggestion that anyone who does it should be put in jail to be a little much. Fortunately, your opinion is just that, and you are welcome to yours. My opinion is the polar opposite, and I will never support outlawing it.

Luckily, at least in my area, most Vets refuse to declaw even though it is easy money. In my opinion that is just taking the easy way out. Cats can be trained not to claw furniture. I feel the same about having a dogs vocal cords cut to stop barking.

Sprinkle a little cayenne pepper around the furniture... Then put foil on the arms, back and seats... They will figure it out pretty soon.
Around my house, my kitties all learn my growl! When they are doing something they are not supposed to, all I do is growl and they go scramblin!
Of course, I just sorta inherited two new kitties... So we are in the process of learning the little stinkers what it means! :-)
As you are figuring out, leather furniture and pets are not a good mix. Also, if you train them to stay off the furniture, that will mean all the time, so you cant have little kitty sitting on your lap and expect them to stay off when you are gone.
