Any more. Since they worked on Independence. Depending on the time of day. We just shoot right down the middle. In the early morning it is closer, and less traffic than 485. There is one place on 485 that traffic stops nearly everytime we go thru.
I remember the time when the big gold building was the end of traffic lights between Charlotte , and Monroe. Now it is the begining.

Typically the only time we're on 485 (for camping trips), is when we're headed to Myrtle Beach. We typically roll early in the morning, and there is a good bit of traffic then. However, we've found 485 moves very well, is pretty much 65-70 mph the whole way, until we get off on Independence. In the morning, the traffic typically is going the other way, on the inner loop. Outer loop pretty much is wide open in the mornings when we take it.
Where on 485 does it stop for you? I can't recall that ever happening to us, on the outer loop in the mornings. I actually used to work in Ballantyne and commuted 485 (outer loop) every morning. I don't recall it every slowing down much, except a few rare occasions where there was a big accident.
From 85, just befor you get to Johnston road. There is a mall or somethimg. Traffic backs up for miles. Everytime we go by. The other side. coming from 74 don't do it. That is why, IF we are going to Wilmington, and it is early in the morning. We just run Independence. However when going to South Myrtle, We have to use 485, cause we get off at Johnston road, and run down thru Lancaster
521 to 903 to 171? to Darlington to Qumby to 501 to 544, and into the CG.

It's been a while. If it were comming from where you are, I'd go 85/485/74. Just make sure you go at non-peak times.
See ya in Gatlinburg... Mark
Hey, Mark. Yes, it has been a while. Yes, 85/485/74 is what we're going to do. I hadn't realized they had made so much of 74 into 4 lane divided highway, that pretty much makes it a no-brainer decision.
Ummm...Your signature says you're in Texas. Did you move away from NC? I hope not.
Unfortunately, we won't make the Ford truck rally in Gatlinburg this year. Had too many other commitments, that had to fall right at same time as that rally. Hope to get to it next year, if we have it again.
Final update/conclusion to this thread: I am at Wilmington KOA now (their free WiFi is excellent, obviously I'm using it to send this ). Really like it here, everyone is having a great time.
I took 74 as planned, and WOW, that route is nothing like I remember it being! Terry, there were still a few slowdowns after Monroe - namely in Wadesboro, and a little in Laurinburg. But, after that, it truly seemed like interstate the whole way, we never dropped under 60 mph after first part of Laurinburg (until we got right close to Wilmington).
Speaking of things being different: Man, Wilmington sure has changed, too, since I went to school here back in '94. Don't hardly recognize the place anymore. But, thats a whole 'nother topic.
Anyway, thanks to all, for pointing me in the right direction.
