Just returned from 2 weeks at MB. 3rd night I almost lost my awning.

I always put "two sets" of deflappers, and ratcheting straps holding the awning to the ground.
I also put a good tilt on it.

Around 11:30pm a strong wind and rain/lightning storm blew in and I looked out and one of my ratchet straps had come off, and both sets of deflappers. I was watching my awning blow around like a big sail. It was rocking the camper like crazy.

I finally got out and started fighing it down, looking around me, the other campers awnings looked like there was no wind at all. It was crazy. I noticed the guy aross the road from me sitting there watching me fight my awining while he was having a smoke.

It was the craziest wind. It was like it was being funneled into my spot.

The guy behind me had springs on his straps, and suggested I put them on mine. I did, but we didn't have any more bad wind.

I was lucky. I guess sometimes it doesn't matter what you do to protect yourself.

I never leave my awning up overnight. I have been in the rain and wind in my PJ's enough to learn that.

I have never used deflappers. I have always tied my awning down when I extend it out. Tieing the awning down should be your #1 priority after it is extended and tilted.

The above precautions are fine for normal wind. However, if any major storm is expected it's always best to put the awning up. Also I would suggest putting the awning up when retiring for the evening lest you are rousted in the middle of the night in a rain storm to secure your awning.

I'll bet the onlooker told his wife "you'll not believe what I just saw".

I'm glad for you it didn't get damaged.

I leave mine out it covers my mobility scooter.

My father was the victim of a windy nite and lost his awning. So.... I always use 3 de-flappers on each side of my awning, ask neighbors about local wind conditions and listen to the weather radio. On advise of neighbors and the radio I have not been caught off guard.

We were @ m/b about 3 weeks ago and we were faced with the same thing for 3 nights in a row. After the first night watching and wondering if my awning was going to survive I put mine up every night after that. And like you said serveral others awnings wasn't even moving, but they were under the trees,so I guess this made a some what of a buffer.I had 3 deflappers on each side and also had both corners tied down and used bungee straps on the ends. Its not a pleasant feeling waking up to the TT rocking and nothing you can do because the lightning is to bad.

Last year in the Outer Banks had an early morning storm come up quick. Tried to put the awning up but the wind was two much. A neighbor helped the wife and I hold onto it until the wind died down and I could put it up. Some bend parts. Got lucky. Two other campers in the CG lost there awnings. Put the awning away every night before bed. Pat
