Hello everyone, we are going to be in Vicksburg for a few days the last week af August, and was wondering if we could get some first-hand info. on some parks? I have been looking at three, Ameristar, Magnolia RV park, and the Battlefield Campground RV Park. Found some reviews on Ameristar and Magnolia, but none on Battlefield. Shade seems to be scarce so level and not real close would be nice. We are going to be there for the history of the area, so Casinos are not that important. Thanks for any advice or thoughts you might have.

We stayed at Askew's Landing http://www.askewslanding.com/
It is one of our all-time favorite campgrounds. There is a small lake with LOTS of birds. At night, there was a symphony of frogs, toads and bugs. Truly a beautiful place!

We stayed at Ameristar when passing through the area it was clean quite friendly FH park no pool if I remember right but had cable there were a few small trees but to small for shade the sites and roads were paved and the drainage was very good as it was raining hard when we were there and it did not puddle in the sites, there was some grass at each site and they had a free shuttle on call to take you to the casino and restaurants as it is about 3 blocks away. Have fun
We like Ameristar. We have stayed there twice to see the area. We don't gamble. You get one free breakfast buffet(for 2) per stay. The breakfast is well worth it even if you had to pay. The RV park is very reasonably priced. I think it's under $25 and I believe there is a small pool. The battlefield was interesting. Particularly the Cairo ironclad. Sites are pretty level and fair sized. Our freinds were there in a 40' motorhome with toad and had no issues. Would us it again. Very convenient. Trains go by occasionally but they are 30' below the campground and not particularly noticeable.
Drive down the Natchez Trace to Natchez. Interesting little town. There are some museums along the way. We went over to LA at Natchez and visited the Frogmore Plantation. It is a working cotton farm now. It was ok.

I stayed at Battlefield a few years ago and it was a DUMP. But, a dump right on the Battlefield. I'd go for Askew's Landing if doing it again. You might want to check Battlefield again - perhaps it's under new management by now as it was for sale in those days.
We stayed at the Ameristar for 2 nights, 5 weeks back. The sites are level, paved and easy to get in and out of. No shade to speak of but we went to tour the town and historical sites. It wasn't up to Rafter J (Keystone SD) standards from a scenery or amenities point of view but user friendly and worth the price.
There is a Sports Bar and Grill in the Old town (the Warehouse on Washington ST I believe) that had a very good Bacon Cheeseburger and ("wicked good ") fried pickles. The only downside was it was they did not have a non-smoking section. I'd eat there again anyway tho.
The battlefield tour and museum are excellent. That said, take some spray Deet or bug repellent. A good portion of the park is not mowed regularly so walking to markers to read are in tall grass.
Have a good time.
