The idea that employers provide jobs and therefore are somehow benevolent, is a "myth". If they could create larger profits by using mechanization/robots, they would. I don't think they believe they're responsible for providing employment; rather, they employ people only when other options like mechanization aren't as profitable--and therefore, the employer needs the worker to maximize profit.
I know, I know, I don't have a MBA and never ran a major corporation.
BURLMART I think you have to decide if you or an "us" or a "them" , which may translate to "the woe is me gang" or "the folks in charge did good gang".
There can be no outside cause nor can you belong to another gang. SOOO Choose your story, but recall that whatever story you choose reality is what it is.

There is no sense of jealousy the people I speak of are hard working people some I worked with and some I worked for, some of whom worked for me… I appreciated them and what they done for me, all of them, I only hope they appreciated me as well… most that worked for me, moved on to bigger and better things and I while I hated to see them go I would have been disappointed in them had they not…
The workforce is the back bone of the company, it includes both hourly and salary people, union and non, doing the things required to make the company a productive unit… the guy the keeps the plumbing working is as important as any of the others to keep things running smoothly…
There is not a us or them, there are many well run and managed companies, they to are dragged down by the weight of poorly managed companies… WE are all effected by this…
for example how many good companies have or will be brought down by the mismanaged GM and their shorted sighted management failures… suppliers to GM that won’t survive their reorganization that so many of you were happy to see come about… through no fault of their own they and their employees will lose to mismanagement…
Many companies are mismanaged, top heavy, and cause more problems than the solve with-in the company… many are grossly over paid, and worse guaranteed outrageous compensation packages not based on performance… many of these people are not owners or sole proprietors, they don’t have everything or theirs life’s work at risk… they are driven by greed and/or power not a allegiance to the company or it workforce…
Criticism of them is justified because what they do in some small way touches all of our lives… they often are the example, means and justification of other managers looking for quick riches to follow…
Many companies are mismanaged, fortunately many more are not… left unchecked and unregulated the problem grows… in that sense it is us and them…

I worked on a factory floor until I figured out a better way.
Perhaps if the "workers" you so elegantly refer to spent more time worrying about their own plight in life rather than what the people who they work for make, they would themselves do better.
What percentage statistically, and it is certainly not 400%, that the lowest compared to the highest makes in any company has nothing to do with anything other than petty jealously. People are on the free market and can certainly sell themselves to a higher bidder when they find one. The market sets the wages for skill sets, not theorists who want it to be different.
Wait a minute, there. Who says work is a "plight?"
Who says working with your hands is something to be ashamed of, to "raise yourself from?"
It's not petty jealousy. It is that the people who make the Whazits, the truckers who transport them and the people who sell them in stores are worth more than charity wages.
The workforce is the company's bread and butter.
Please, we are all in this slop of a mess. And it took some time to create it.
It's going to take as long to get out of it, so snide language --from anyone-- is no help.

My statements in no way are meant to disparage any worker. It would be unfair to portray my comments in that manner and I am not denigrating any job classification unlike those who seem to be attacking the "short sighted" and "mis-management" types referred to.
Plight can describe any position where the employee either feels underpaid or abused. If in that position, don't lament what others are receiving but strive to raise yourself to the level you think you should obtain or find another job. The answer does not lie in taking away from the fortunate in order to give to the unfortunate. Any good manager should realize there are only two people who you have to concern yourself with. The very bottom person and the very top person. If you continuously elevate both, the rest will follow.
