I saw the thread on another forum about what people like to listen to when driving & I realized that I get pretty poor AM reception on my class C & it got me thinking do other people get decent AM radio reception? I know that the overall design of a C probably doesn't help the signal but about the only time I get reception is in town. Probably time to look at satellite radio!

Am radio ? Is that still around? FM another thing of the passed.
OK sorry about that. The few times I tried AM there was not much on. But reception was OK.
Only use Satellite radio now.

AM radio is pretty much line of sight and about 40 miles is as far from a station as you can be. The radio stations with 50,000 watts can many times be heard very far away. I have heard KFAB in Lincoln Nebraska in New York and Colorado. Many time the location of the antenna determines what stations can be picked up. If your AM antenna is in the windshield or under the cabover you will not hear much.

Am is fairly poor on my MH as well compared to my other vehicles.
AM still has it's place for newstalk, traffic and sports.
Satellite is great but doesn't cover everyones locales or teams. IE: staellite traffic radio on XM is great idf you live in Boston, NY, LA, Chicago or Miami.

I dropped AM and FM and went with satellite. This way I start listening to a program and can listen to the whole program without losing it as I travel down the road.

AM radio is not "line of site", thus the name Amplitude Modulation. That is why you can get stations from afar late at night cause of the radio waves bouncing off the ionosphere. FM is Frequency Modulation and is closer to "line of site". The AM sections in most newer radios are not very good in my experience, not like the older Philcos, etc. Also, most remaining AM stations are underpowered compared to the old days of AM, so reception is not very good and the sound is inferior due to the characteristics of the signal.

Our Chevy chassis with the radio installed by Trail Lite gets bunches of AM stations in the Midwest. Doing a "seek" picks up stations at about every 10 to 20 frequencies. Great if you enjoy "talk radio", weather, or news updates. For music, we use CD's. By the way, KFAB is 1110 on the AM dial right here in Omaha. With skip, I've picked it up in Houston, TX.

AM is not line of site. Depending on power output, weather and what's going on in space you can get it a looooong way away. You can get stations a long way away on "the bounce" off the ionosphere at night. I've picked up Seattle (KIRO) in So Cal (Palmdale), Chicago, in Glasgow MT, and San Diego in Issaquah, Wa. all in early morning hours.
Check your antenna grounding. It needs a good ground plane to work right.
