Hope someone can help, I've searched for similar conditions but nothing seems to match. I have a 2000 Fleetwood Southwind with a FORD Triton V10.

I have a noise that is coming from the engine area. The sound is like a rattle, almost like I have bad gas. If I put the RV in park and raise the RPM I never hear the sounds. I put the RV in gear, apply break raise the RPM and no noise. I thought it may be the wind, but I ran the RV with the engine cover up and the noise definitely is coming from the engine.

As I accelerate the noise comes and goes. At 60 mph the noise is pretty constant, around 70 I don't hear it as often.

I thought it might be this spark plug issues I've been reading about, but if I had he spark plug problem shouldn't I hear the noise when the vehicle is in park?

Other then the rattle sound, the performance of the engine seems just fine.

Any ideas? I have 30,000 miles on the RV.

Might want to check your plugs, you might have a loose one. A loose plug will eject eventually which in the process damages the threads in the head.

Does the lack of the sound when the RV is parked and engine rev'ed high mean anything?

thanks for the reply! I'll look at the spark plugs this weekend. Anything else to check?

Could be detonation due to a dirty Mass Airflow Sensor. Could also be a noisy PCV valve. Can you try to be more descriptive of the sound?

Could also be the transmission inspection plate - famous for rattling. Something to check. If you can, get someone else behind the wheel and crawl under while they raise the rpms - when you hear the sound, press on the tranny inspection plate and see if it stops.

Also, a loose cat converter shield or muffler shield will do the same thing.

B's rv I had a noise problem on my 2005 Southwind (ford v10). It wounld come and go.The wife finally you need to figure it out. After crawling under and looking everywhere ,I found the the heat shield by the headers were really close to each other after bending it away from each other my rattle stopped. good luck.

Could be a lot of things. The one that could be the most trouble would be a loose spark plug. It will take a little time, but it's not hard to remove the coil on plugs (COP) and check the torque on plugs. It should be 168 In-lbs. Not a bad idea to do this even if it isn't the source of the noise.

You could also try a tank of 89 octane fuel------if the noise goes away, then it is pinging and you have a timing or carbon problem.

Thanks all!

The noise sounds like a marble in a can when you shake it. The frequency (?) of the rattle remains the same regardless of motor rpm or speed. Again only when the RV is moving. I will check everything suggested so far. I have some hope now.

EGR valve ?

Carringb mentioned the MAF and a dirty one will do that also.

Can you put a scanner on it and seeif there are any stored codes. Many times codes will be stored and not give you a CEL.

Did you try and put premium/high octane in the tank ?
if you put higher octane in and the knocking goes away then it will tell you it's a timing / lean fuel situation.

A quick look at THE DIESEL STOP in the gas engines forum I found a post about the exhaust manifolds getting loose which could cause a ticking noise.

Learn something new every day.
