I'm probably going to do a 2,200 mile (one-way) trip pulling a 29' TT in the next couple of months. Almost entirely interstate driving. One thing I'm considering is doing most of the driving from midnight to 0900 to try and avoid traffic. At the very least I will plan my hours going through metropolitan areas before morning rush. Has anyone done this sort of thing before? Any issues? Security? Roadside assistance issues? Will some rv parks allow transient day sleepers? More to the point...is this a stupd idea?

If you are a "night" person, you'll have no problems. If you are naturally a "day" person, or a "morning" person, you'll be getting very tired and sleepy.

I prefer driving at night. I love night driving! But looking at white lines on the road pass by one after another after another can be very hypnotizing! If you're not use to that, don't do it. You'll get too sleepy!

But, if you're the type that has no issues and your best time of day is actually at night, you'll be fine!

I'm a night person, have been all my life! So why do I have a job that requires me to be at work at 7:00 AM every day! I'm must be crazy! No wonder I feel sleepy all day and ready to zoom-zoom after 11 pm! Drives my wife crazy!

Stupid? No.. I do it in really hot weather. The only thing I get concerned about is animals on the roadway.

Left Christmas night at 11 pm for Florida this past year and drove till 12 pm the next day and were able to cover more miles than if it had been daylight and having to deal with all the traffic. Plan on doing ththe same this year, only thing is to hope you don't break down and need help as Im sure it may be hard to find.

The view will be boring....

On long trips, we usually leave at 3AM, if it is a destiantion trip VS a tourist Trip

I've always said "The best way to see Kansas is at night" so go for it.

Night driver here as well... I prefer it for less traffic, sleeping kids and spouse.

I usually make sure I have enough drink on hand (coffee or soda) and keep a 5 hour energy drink in reach as well. I also drive with the window cracked down a bit for some fresh air. All of that keeps me awake and alert.

I've found a novel way to handle night driving:

Provigil...

Look it up. Works like a charm ;-)

I like night driving, but even better, as the only driver, I like to completely disregard the clock. Drive till beginning to get tired, rest, then drive again. No matter the time of day or night, when the body and mind say "enough" I find a place and jump in bed. A little nap of an hour or two, then get up, freshen up, and go again. With my power nap system, it's not unusual to log 18 hours or more of drive-time per 24 hours. I try also to be off the road and napping during commuter times.
