For the first 20-30 years of RVing, most popups or tent trailers were home-made. People who couldn't come up with their own designs got plans from home mechanic magazines. Check Popular Mechanics archive for 1920 through 1930, they were building some kind of travel or camping something almost every month.

Or boat, radio, shop tool, etc.
