We read that Medicare can't be used in Canada. Is there such a thing as temporary health insurance that can be purchased for the week that we are in Canada. My husband has some health problems and we would like to know that we are covered.

Try AAA or check the yellow pages for Travel Health Insurance. There are
tons of companies that would love to sell you some coverage. Also, if you
are a Good Sam Member, they offer health insurance referrals.
You are correct, you should definitely have travel health insurance to leave
your country. You are not covered in Canada without it.

Do you have any private health insurance for yourselves right now? If so, call them about coming to Canada.
When I go south for more than a week, I call the private insurance that I normally carry for drug plan, dental, etc, I call them and pay for travel insurance. Our medicare doesn't cover us in your country either.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

If you have a medicare supplement, it may cover you in Canada. Mine covers me in Canada. I have to pay the bill up there and present it for payment to my supplement provider.

Check your credit card. Some credit card plans include travel insurance up to maybe 30 days. Your main concern is hospitalization. If you had to pay for it, it would be considerably cheaper than in the US, but still a vacation wrecker. A lot of provinces have drop in clinics where you can see a doctor for about $35-$40.
You may find your own US medical insurer will cover you. After all, they will have to pay out far less than if you get sick in the US. Worth asking them. Canadian medicare, which is effectively an insurance program, covers Canadians up to what it would cost in Canada if they end up in hospital in the US, so it may work the same in reverse.

If you have a separate medicare supplement policy, it does cover you when traveling in Canada. See your policy. (Double check this, but I don't think it's changed.)
Medicare supplements are alike in this regard (regardless of the provider), since foreign country coverage is mandated for all Medicare supplement policies by law.
On my policy, coverage is 80% of Medicare-approved expenses, during the first 60 days of a trip, after a $250 deductable, with a lifetime limit of $50,000. Supplement covers 100% of additional Medicare-approved expenses after my costs exceed $1,000.

When we buy travel insurance we include air transport to our home town. If something happens that is long term you don't want to be stuck a zillion miles from home (in either country).
