The Carefree awning on my trailer needs adjustment. It does not want to retract to its storage position. The only way it now works is if my wife pushes the support on one side when I push the support on the other. Has anyone fixed a similar problem on their awning?

Sounds like you have a broken spring. If you are not knowledgeable in changing springs it is a job for a professional.

How far is it retracting on its own? It sounds like a similar problem I'm having.

If it is 7 yrs old it could be that the spring just needs tightening. If it starts to pull up but just doesn't have enough umph for that last few feet, it more than likely just needs to be tightened.

This not a do it yourself job. I've seen it done. It is extremely dangerous. Let a repair shop do it. It won't take them 15 mins if that is the problem..

This sounds like the problem I am having. The spring works OK and the awning retracts just fine until the arms are just short of the closing position. The problem seems to be that the arms are just a touch too low and the top of the arm and get hung up on the vertical fixed post. The remedy is probably too adjust the moving arm up a fraction (ther is a retaining bolt at the bottom).

It sounds like the problem I just started having the last couple times out. The spring tension doesn't appear to have changed but as it rolls up, it seems to be rolling crooked. When it is in the fully retracted position, the arms don't want to nest inside each other as before. Pushing on the arms doesn't seem to help nor does moving the strap from the center position to one end or the other.

As I was typing, I just had a thought. I'm wondering if the awning has slid one way or the other in the groove on the roll. I checked the position at the top rail but forgot to check on the roll. You might try looking there. I plan to do the same when I go out next weekend. Good Luck.

If you will spray inside of each end of the awning tube with wd40 t6his might cure the problem. Mine did the the same thing and spraying it with wd40 fixed the problem.

If there is a will there is a way.

Interesting. This is the exact same problem that I've been asking about. It started on mine a couple weeks ago. The awning will retract and the left side bar locks-in a the top, but the right are will not. If you look when the awning is almost in its fully retracted position (about 6 inches left to retract), notice whether or not one bar is a bit futher out from the vertical bar than the other. That's the case in my situation. When my left side is only a couple inches way from being fully vertical and ready to latch at the top, the right bar is maybe 4 to 6 inches away versus the 2 inches on the good/locking side. I can't figure out what's causing this.

I had a closing problem with the arms not aligning correctly for a proper close. I fixed it by removing the retaining screws at each end where the fabric attaches to the trailer and opening and closing several times to let the fabric find it's own position, then reinstalling the screws. Works perfect now. ( It took me months to figure out that's all I needed to do.)

Mine seems to be more of an issue where one side is not winding as much as the other side by a couple/few inches.
