We tow a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. No problems so far. Just put the transfer case in neutral, turn the key to the first position to unlock the steering wheel and put the brake cylinder in position. Done, ready to go.
Since we carry two sets of keys we always lock the toad.

I am not so concerned with theft since I would probably see the person trying to jump from their car onto the roof of the toad. I could probably shake them off with a few lane changes and application of brakes. LOL Actually, if we leave sight of the rig while enroute, we take the keys out of the toad. On return we always check all connections, safety cables, lock pins, kick the tires etc. to be sure nothing was tampered with. Then put the key back in and go!

The type of toad you need will depend on: towing weight limit, comfort, type of use needed when unhooked, and fuel usage. Some people do indeed desire a 4x4 or all wheel drive to deal with tough terrain. Some people need to haul quite a few items in thier toad (bicycles, kayak, etc.), some people don't mind the rougher ride and handling of an all wheel drive rig, yet some people just want a very comfortable fuel efficient car to drive, mostly on paved streets & highways to visit tourist venues and go shopping. Many people want to tow thier favorite car they've driven for years. Therefore you will hear a wide variety of opinions and needs. Choose what suits you best.

We started out 7 years ago towing a chevy s-10 with topper to easily haul bicycles in a clean area. We now tow a Chevy Malibu Maxx that gets 35 mpg, roomy enough for us and our pets, or guests.

Enjoy your search for a toad!

Forgot to say: we tow our Malibu 4 down. All we have to do is pull one fuse.

We have been very happy with 2009 Subaru Forester w/ manual transmission. SUV, all around MPG 25.2, all wheel drive; all for less than $20,000-what's not to like! I haven't seen anything yet that I would like better for our Monaco La Palma, 2004, 8.1 GMC gasser, 36'. If I had a diesel pusher perhaps would go for something different, maybe Jeep with 4 doors (Wrangler) and rag top.

Price as a factor for use but if I could afford a diesel pusher then I could afford a more top of the line Toad.
