I'm sitting here listening to my Don Rich CD and thinking that, since I'm going to San Diego for Christmas and that Donny was the lead guitar and singer in the band I had in high school.that we'd stay overnite in Bakersfield and eat dinner at the Crystal Palace.Sooo, what is a good cg to stay at and is the restaurant worth going too?
I really like to keep my miles under 300 and we're coming from Stockton that day and is 99 any better or worse than that stretch of I-5.

I stayed at Orange Grove, was very satisfied with it, but there are closer CG's & I'll leave it to others to comment & you to chose. The show at the CP was well worth the $$ but dinner was nothing special. Don't order the catfish. Won't comment on 99 'cause it's been almost a year.

Been to OG and Bakersfield RV resort is much better IMO.
And yes the restaurant has good food.

Just drove from Sacramento to Bakersfield last Friday and Garmin said to go down I5. Much has been repaved and it seemed smoother than I remember last. Easy drive, light traffic.

With 5 having higher speed limit - 70 for autos vs 55 for towing, I would go 99. Personally, I find 99 less stressful, especially towing, than 5. As far as road surfaces, I think they are about the same. A lot of new asphalt sections on 99.

I concur. We just drove the same route a few days ago - his observation is spot on.

The Orange Grove is a very nice Park but is out of the way if your not taking Hwy 58 to Mojave.

Don't forget to take in all the dives while there. They have a bunch. The one thing that impressed me about Bakersfield many years ago was the respect for the working man. You could go anywhere in town wearing bib overalls and be treated with dignitity. My old buddy often wore them when he worked the freight train to that area and he was always treated like a king when he entered the finest eating establishments.

The Buckaroos play on Friday and Saturday nights ~ unless a special concert. The food is great ~ chicken fried steak or the ribs are a good choice. Call for reservations well in advance. Buck Owen's son Buddy usually flies in from Arizona for the weekend shows.

When you drive back through, stop at one of the Basque restaurants around town ~ there are Spanish Basque and French Basque ~ all are unique and quite the dining experience.

I had a friend fly in from New York City to Bakersfield for the first time. She had never seen a town with so many people driving pick-up trucks.
