Do you leave your e-brake on all the time or just when you need it?
What are the advantages/disadvantages to each mode? For the 500 or so miles I have driven my new rig, I like to turn it on only when I need it or for around town driving only.

Thanks,
Tim

Like you, I turn it on only when needed (or in stop and go traffic).

Leaving it on eliminates my favorite gear-- COASTING.

I leave it on all the time. Helps to stop a big rig much better than relying only on the chassis brakes.

When I left mine on it drove me nuts, every time I let of the petal it would engage. I ended up wiring a small relay in it so it doesn't engage unless I tap the brake petal, then if I tap the accelerator it disengages. Works real good and I now leave it on all the time. Here is a link for a produced version of the system.

I also turn it off when I don't need it. Maybe it's something I need to get use to, but I find it annoying that everytime I lift my foot up on the accelerator it applies the ex-brake.

I leave mine on fulltime. I just barely feather the trottle if I don't want the exhaust brake to engage, when I am slowing down.

The advantage of leaving them on is that the exhaust brake mechanism
will have less problems, as far as sticking, then if you just use them now and then.
The disadvantage is you may not use your service brakes enough to keep them in top shape. I have to purposely do some hard braking on my trips to keep the service brakes in good shape.

I'm with Brett on coasting and that is why I like the left foot switch on this DP to turn Jake Brake on. On previous DP I filed groves and added a rubber cabinet stop to the switch so I could turn it on and off without having to look to see if I had the correct switch.

Exhaust Brake Switch

I just had a BrakeSwitch installed at Custom RV in Red Bay/Vina, AL on my Spartan MM chassis and ABSOLUTELY LOVE it!!! The EB now stays ON ALL of the time and I get the benefit of coasting until the service brakes are tapped, engaging the EB. No more automatic activation of the EB when the master switch is turned ON. It should make for a lot safer driving and braking with no fumbling for the master switch when the EB is really needed in an emergency stop.
