Because they take about 10% of the space of a standard tube? Because you can easily build them in or hide them nearly anywhere? Because they come in a variety of colors, lengths?

C'mon guys, think a little about alternate possibilities, not just standard tubes in a plain fixture. Get creative, do some customizing.

OK, but I didn't catch the part in the OP that said he wanted to put up some ticky tack gaudy decorations. I was under the mis-impression that he was talking about RV lighting situations, where you can't beat fluorescents for normal use. Of course you could use 40 watt equivalent LED bulbs which have the brightness of a 20 watt CFL.

Didn't catch that part either did you? To me built in or hidden doesn't equal a ticky tack gaudy decoration. I have used them for edge lighting of control panels, ambience lighting, under vehicles, night light types of lighting.

This is an panel I made for a restoration. It was engraved from the rear, filled with white paint and edge lit.
