Im new camper. Could a person buy one of the less expensive and loud box generators like say from HF or Northern tool or Home Depot could I successfully rig up an exhaust system that would make it much quieter. Perhaps a muffler from a motorcycle or small car?

You will find that the exhaust is only the beginning. It's pretty tough to get one anywhere near as quiet as a Yamaha or Honda inverter style genterator. Most of what I hear when we camp at Nascar races is vibrating parts and engine noises as much as exhaust.

Look up a thread on Chinese Generators. A ton of info and enough pages to keep you out of trouble for a month.

Mechanical noise is most of it and will remain. Far better to do get a quiet generator from the get go. By the time you get it quiet with an enclosure muffler etc you will have more time and cost invested than just getting something that is good right out of the box. If you need to save money look at Craig's list etc for a used one but you will need to move fast as the best deals are gone in a day.
