Has anybody ever experimented with a solar panel for hot water? With Cap in Trade coming I expect the price of propane to skyrocket. Just looking for a cheaper way to heat water.

I don't think we need to worry about cap and trade only a fool would vote for it.

There is no shortage of fools.
There are solar water heaters but most are big. You can make a smaller one but of course capacity is diminished. You can build one using PVC pipes painted black and route the feed and drain lines as needed. I saw an article online about this but can't remember where. I do know it was ugly but up on the roof, no one sees it.

Just hammer your Rep. and Senators like health care and cap and trade will go away and vote out those who are for it.
I installed solar for charging my batteries last winter and love it and am going to install more this winter but I don't know about heating water. I too would like to know more about it.

We use a Solar Bag (1 gal) to heat water in the Sun it is fine for rinsing off after a Day on the Beach! Some folks that we have met along the way use Larger Water containers painted Flat Black that They stick on the Roof while Dry Camping in Mexico. they can have several showers before having to Refill!
None of these is a permanent installation!

If propane was 15 bucks a gallon it would not be worth it. It just does not take that much propane to run the water heater. If you want to save propane only turn it on when you need it.

Hi All.
I don't mean to be rude or disrespectful. But if the small cost to run a Hot Water Heater bothers you that much. You should think about some thing else to do besides RV'ing. We only turn the Hot Water Tank on for a few minutes in the morning, then again in the evening. We have plenty of hot water all day long, and all night long as well. Stop worrying so much, and just go have some fun. For what a Solar Water Heater would cost, it would pay for Propane for many years for your Hot Water Heater, and then some. Good Luck. Happy Camping. It's not that I'm worried about the cost of lp. It;s just the fact that it's another trip to town, and I will do just about anything to keep from paying a ridiculous tax. The "green movement" wants us to use renewable sources of energy. I'm just trying to do my part.
