IMO, It is a toss up taking I-75 to Chattanooga and I-59 to B-Ham, then taking I-65 to Montgomery. There take US 331 south to the beach. The only draw back it the stretch of I-59 from around Fort Payne to Gadsden. It is ROUGH!!!!! The traffic thru Atlanta on I-285 around to I-85 can vary depending on time of day.

It's really a toss up. Rough road or the Atlanta traffic.

Just made that trip this July. West on I-40 then south on I-75 to Chat. Take I-59 south into Alabama to Birmingham then south on I-65 to Montgomery. Stay south on 65 to Evergreen, Alabama take exit 93 onto Hwy 31 south to Brewton, Alabama. Secondary road but quality travel time. Hwy 31 becomes Hwy 41 and crossing into Fla it becomes Hwy 87 which goes into Milton, Fla. Watch for I-10 east sign in Milton and take I-10 east to exit 56 onto Hwy 85 south. This will bring you into Fort Walton Beach at Hwy 98. Left turn on 98 and 12
miles to Destin. I know this sounds like a lot of turns, country roads and dipsy-do driving but it really isn't. I plugged data into my gps and had a very pleasant trip in our MH. You also avoid the mess in Atlanta and in Tallahassee by taking this route. There are places to refuel all along hwys 31, 41 and 87 and some nice scenery without the interstate hassles. Safe trip...

Ditto...noe-place. The stretch of I-59 between Fort Payne and Gadsden, AL is rough in the right lane, travel in the fast lane which is good. You'll see the big trucks traveling in the fast lane and everyone appears to accept the fact that that is the lane of choice because they come up behind and move over to the slow lane to pass you without and finger salutes.

We went this way to Navarre this year. When we came back we stayed on AL-41 in Brewton, got on I-65 at exit 77. It's a few more miles, but just as quick. You also have rest areas on I-65 between exits 93 and 77.

We went to Destin this spring thru Atlanta and the traffic was pretty bad but the worst was the constrution on I85 south of Atlanta. Next time we head that way we'll be going via Knoxville, Chattanooga, Birmingham, and Montgomery. Sooner or later they'll fix the rough part of I59 but the traffic in Atlanta will never get better.
