We have a 1998 Starflyte (Coachman I think it is) that we bought in 2003. We have never had problems with the generator. It has been stored during the winter in a covered barn. We have never done the every 30 day generator start as we are gone a lot in the winter. This past spring we had a fire and it was outside during several cold months.
OK...it works, but it surges. Onan site said that it will always surge, but what do we do to stop the surge??
My husband rebuilt a HotRod from the ground up..so is engine savvy. Says there is no varnish in the carburator. Has cleaned all the parts that he is aware of. Are we missing something??? I read all the generator posts and none of the issues that were addressed help with our problem.
It stops surging under no load condition but dies when AC is turned on and starts surging under load of fan, micro etc. Runs smooth then surges then runs smooth. It just plain dies with too much load. We first noticed the surge problem with just the TV running.
It is a 2.8 Onan....Serial number C980716314. 2.8 KU-FA/26100 G.
I believe the hunting you describe indicates a problem with the genset's output voltage. The genset should not surge. Make sure there are no obstructions around the linkage. Could still be a carb issue though. Probably best to have a Cummins service cntr take a look.

The Onan website said the surge would never go away. We have not talked to anyone at Onan. The owners manual talked of the varnish problem of generators if they weren't run 1 - 2 hours every month. Several posts have talked of this problem. Carburator sure appears real clean...nothing at all remotely obvious.
Ken, we have never done the fuel stabilizer in the motorhome. Like I said we have never ever had a problem with this generator. Has run like a dream until this year. We were just hoping that maybe some of you smart buffs might have had a similar problem and had a good answer
Sorry, but unless DH ran fuel system cleaner mixed with gas thru the carb with it running, let it sit for a while, and ran it some more, it's unlikely that he got it clean enough. Like Gunny sez, it's a small carb with very small passages. The surge _can_ be eliminated if it's the carb. BTDT, twice, on 2.8's. I've read that it also can be from tarnished slip rings, but thankfully have no first-hand experience there.
