I could use some support on a minor? electrical problem. I have checked in past posts but would appreciate any help as electrical is not my strong suit. Tv is an Uplander and pup is a Palomino Pony. We luv 'em both, tow great and lots of room. Our tv is only wired with a standard four pin connector., while the pup has the seven blade. We have been using it this way so far with no issues other than not charging battery, which I am hoping to rectify this week. By the way, our pup does not have brakes. The adapter we use, from four pin to seven blade, has three additional wires, with black being at the one oclock position. I have an open fuse that is always powered in my interior fuse block of tv. Is it as simple as using that space and running a twelve? gauge wire to the black wire on the adapter, along with ?size in line fuse? Thanks for any help you might offer.

You should put the 7 pin connector on your truck, then run your wire with the 12v to this connector which will feed the battery on the pup. Make sure the circuit you use on your truck is turned off when your truck is not running, you'll avoid draining the battery if you leave the trailer hitched for the night (speaking from experience...).

An AWG 10 or even an 8 wire would be ideal with a 30A fuse.
Relayed to be hot with ignition is a good idea.
Edited to add: I ran my 10 gauge wire in black plastic tube for automotive electrical.

When you run a wire from the TV to the pup the there is a significant voltage drop. In your example, with a 20 foot length of 12 AGW trying to pass 5 amps drop will be .326 volts. 10 AGW - .205 volts. 8 AGW - .129 volts.
If you just want to charge when you drive down the road, look at 10 gauge with a 25 or 30 amp fuse. Put a fuse on the line at the pup battery also.
If you want more use an 8 gauge.

Thanks for the help, toaobigal, red31, and garym114. Just to be clear, is any open space on my fusebox that has power when the key is on appropriate? As well,an inline fuse should be placed both between fusebox and adapter and then another between adapter and pup's battery. thanx again. Bob

I used to work at an RV Dealership, Use 10 Ga wire. since it is the largest that will fit for the 7 way plug. Install a 7 way plug on your bumper Use a 30 amp resettable fuse inline usually under the hood and make sure that you only tap from a source which is hot with the ignition on. I would stay away from the fuse block! You could create other problems by getting power from the fuse block. down line from the battery usually has a hot ignition pole available. Good luck!

By the way the black wire of the trailer is the charge line so this is the position you want to tie the charge line of the tow vehicle too.

Yes, negative. Diodes create a voltage drop and a charge line needs all the voltage you can get.
If we don't have a good 20+ amp key controlled circuit we go directly from the battery with 10 gage, a 30 amp circuit breaker, and a key activated solinoid that will isolate the TV and prevent draw from the TV battery when the engine isn't running.

To all of you that offered advice, thank you. Project went well, with no fires started and w/o defribillating myself, which surprised my darling wife.
