If you notice high fuel milage reports from other Cummins diesel owners most are a 2500 truck and in paticular the Cummins '03/'04 305/555 HO engine.
Many 3500 DRW 4x4 auto tranny 4.10 or lower crew cab big tires heavy options may weigh 8000 lbs or more. Their not going to get the same empty mpgs as 2500 2wd 6 speed manual 3.73 short bed truck that weights 6500-6800 lbs.
My '03 in sig has run a 23.7 mpg on one tank. Then a 23.3 mpg next tank mpg for a back up mpg so it wasn't just a best tank. All pencil figures but the overhead is always .5 to 1 mpgs less. This truck has never been driven in a all city inviroment so I have no idea on city mpgs.
In all fairness to 7.3 PSD and DMAX owners out here where we run 600-900 miles a week commute they also are averaging 20-22 mpg depending on 4x4 or DRW vs SRW/etc.

Pretty funny, only on the RV forum would there be a thread on a new turbo gas motor and not a single post would even talk about it. Only talk about diesel mileage. I'm a GM guy but I'm looking forward to see how this engine works in a truck, especially towing duty. It should be interesting. For the 1/2 ton guys it might work out pretty good. Perhpas much better performance than the 5.4L and much better mileage. I would think the turbo would help with towing at higher elevations as well, just like the turbos on the diesels.

WHy wouldn't it be able to tow a thing? Have you seen the torque curves? It'll make the Cummins guys jealous its so flat. Basically 355 ft.lbs torque available from 2000-5000 RPM. And that's in the Ford Flex. I wouldn't be surprised if Ford tweaks the tuning a bit for the pickup.

No chip, I have just talked to many other rv'ers in campground and fellow boaters that have Dodge tow vehicles and the conversation many times comes around to the cost of fuel and mileage. Most have reported anywhere from 13 to 18-19mpg with their diesel trucks in actual everyday use. My neighbor has a DRW QC 4x4 '08 3500 diesel and he has told me on many occasions that his highway mileage rarely breaks 14mpg. That is not too far greater than what I get with my lowly, diesel slurping pickup.

There's not much chance of winning a mpg battle with a F diesel. The absolute worst mpg I get empty is 18.6 and that is summer (A/C never turned off) city driving. I've only been on the open road one time empty (cuz I'm usually towing on the open road) and got 22.36 at 55-60mph sightseeing. Oh yeh, I have a dually 1T with a HEAVY hauler bed and 4.10s to top it off! And I hand calc every tank I use - not that my OH puter is very far off. The OH is usually low. Craig
