I read a couple of days ago people complaining about how noisy, stinky and expensive diesels are. We've only been towing with diesel for 15 years and yes I'm bias, but I find these complaints frivolous. We've caravaned with people towing with beautiful gas trucks, With diesel I've run cooler in the desert, We've passed our friends going up a grade and crept up a grade with them, leading the pack I've had to wait for them at fuel stops or top off even though I didn't need to. So you that complain are you serious or did I just misunderstand the thread.

I like my diesel just fine but I'd NEVER try to argue that they are NOT noisy, stinky and expensive. Not sure how ONE thing assumes the other.
I ALSO tow with one of those "beautiful gas trucks" and it gets within 2 MPG of my mileage with the diesel (8.5 vs 10.5) and has only a 3 gallon smaller fuel tank (35 gal vs 38 gal). It's every BIT as good a tow vehicle other than when I'm in the mountains and need the extra power.
I guess I just don't understand YOUR premise that if someone thinks they're noisy, stinky and expensive, it means they hate them

When all of these latest generation European Diesel Automobiles from FIAT, Peugot, Ford, Mercedes, VW and Audi get to the US in a year or two...diesel will be the hottest thing since the yuppie loving Hybrid! Cleaner than a Prius, no diesel odor, powerful and quiet, it will change the collective minds of the low brow Americans forever.
And the newest diesel truck of all that sway sceptics is the American Ford Scorpion Diesel PowerStroke 6.7. 20 to 30% better mileage, ultra low emmissions, 50% quieter, clean exhaust and no smoke!
And allthese new cars with fuel mileage in the upper 40 MPG to VW's 130 MPG...they'll sell like tofu hotdogs at a San Francisco "LOVE THE EARTH" festival!
The general public sees diesels as noisy and stinky, which is the main reason we haven't seen them in pass. cars in North America. GM didn't help that image when the produced the 5.7. Now that diesels are cleaner and quieter, Mercedes and Audi are turning up the marketing dollars for this market. A small diesel that consistently gets 30+ mpg makes more sense than any hybrid.
Folks seem to defend what they have by criticizing what they don't have.
I don't like following a diesel vehicle or having to smell a diesel engine just idling more than necessary. I don't like being awakened by a noisy engine (diesel or gas). I don't like unmuffled jake brakes. Diesel engines are much noisier than gasoline engines. FWIW: I also don't like booming stereos.
That said, I have had five diesel mhs and two diesel trucks. I try to keep my diesel from offending (prompt shutdown, quick start up, no jake in town, etc.). There is no gas engine available with the power of my Cummins ISX, so I don't have a choice.

I have never been a fan of diesels. The big thing for me is the fumes give me an instant headache, always have. Don't mind the noise unless someone is just letting it run for not reason but there are few reasons to let any thing run when not in use.

I like 'em both. I make the same stops at the same stations when we travel now as when we had our four Cummins powered Rams. We've seen as high as 102*F outside and haven't had any cooling problems from any of them. We run the same speeds but at 30% higher rpm and approximately 30% more fuel consumption. I can tell by your post and signature that you're pretty tender and sensitive about your diesel pickup truck and for some frivolous reason it bothers you that not everyone shares your enthusiasm about it. Seems kinda petty to me.

I don't hate diesels, I just don't like the noise, how stinky they are, messy,
the cost of owning one. {I have owned three of them and keep going back to a gas rig} Granted they are much quieter now. I was impressed as I tried out a new Ford the other day. VERY IMPRESSIVE !
The new diesels are as quiet as a gas engine and more powerful, thou I have a 7 year old diesel, I love it.
