I am building an RV from a cargo van. What sizes are normally in Class Bs (Fresh, Grey, Black)?? Where can I get them for less?? I checked Camping World and they want over $100 for just a 10 gallon. Has anyone done DIY tanks??
Thanks

Did you already figure out what to do about an electrical service to the van?
You might also want to check the local newspaper for a used trailer that is being scrapped, or find out if there is a junkyard for RV's nearby. You can probably get a fresh water pump, battery charger, and 12 volt fuse panel that is suitable for a good price there.
You will also need a water inlet filler that is lockable, or fill the tank from just inside the door, so that someone does not add anything to your fresh water tank. You also don't want to mistake it for the fuel filler, and add 10 gallons of fuel to the fresh water tank. I heard of that happening before.
What about 12 volts to the lights in the back? I bought some florescent lights at JcWhitney, but they made a high frequency buzz, so I did not like them very much. I now have some thinlites, and I like them much better. 8 and 26 watts.

Check the GWR of the van and watch out for overloading. If you plan to do any dry camping put in the biggest tanks you can fit given size and weight. 25 Fresh and maybe 10 Black and 15 Gray?
Good luck with the project.

I have been looking all of them and decided to make my own.
For class B they need to be shaped tanks to get the bigest size.
I was able to make 19 gallon black, 16 gallon grey and 17 fresh.
I purchased 1/4" Abs plastick sheet , plastic welder (hot air)
Abs can be use only for grey and black. Fresh water it has to be polyethylene plastic ( low density I beleve)
Abs plastick is very easy to weld. For bending I use at work heat strip like 3 feet long. once you hold the plastick on this heat strip for 10min it bends easy. Also for abs I got granulated abs so I mixed with acetone and use that after welding as a glue.
Polyethylene tank is more difficult to make ( I had many leaks)
It shuld be weld in using natrogent gas ( I use air as abs)
Also fittings for polyethylene I had to make my own with stainless steel. They use fittings that are spin in with high speed and melt the plastic.
Fitting for abs are avialable at http://www.rvsurplus.net/
I built a van motorhome some years ago. It had a freshwater tank, graywater tank and a toilet with its own tank. Go to

and click "On the Road Again" and then select 1992 Van for information and pictures.

Beautifully done. Sorry to hear it was totaled. Thanks for the link.
A "B" is so small that I think you ought to install whatever suits your camping style.
I keep two 7 gallon fresh water cubes inside. We own two more but wouldn't think of bringing them except for an extended-stay base camp. Pretty easy to manage to keep them sanitary. Not to mention the lack of underside winterizing up north here.
We own a rolling gray tank but somehow have never needed it. We're either in dispersed boondock locations or at parks where a gallon or two of dishpan water can go down a sink.
I did look all over the Web when I was researching my DIY. Found many kinds of tank suppliers suitable for underside tanks. Also found many plastic marine fuel tanks in all sort of sizes at local stores. Maybe a possibility for your use.
Every 12 gallons you carry is around 100 lbs. Dragstrip rule of thumb is that will cost you .1 second in the quarter-mile. Or a highway entrance ramp.

I installed a 35 gallon fresh water tank under DW's bed...33 1/2"L x 16"W x 19"H
25 gallon grey (under chassis)
20 gallon black (under chassis)
Fitting the grey & black tanks ain't easy if you're go'n for capacity, but it can be done using various available shaped tanks.
To date, I've purchased all tanks here...they ain't cheap but the selection of size/shape and wall thickness is the best!
Remember when ordering to specify the location of 3" waste tank outlets specifically...
