My wife retired at 54 and I followed at 55 in 1994. No regrets! I now wonder how I ever managed to do all the stuff we did while we were working. We have never been bored, as a matter of fact retirement is itself a full time job with all the projects we have planned.
Best job I never had!

Absolutely NO problem making that decision at age 55. When my boss handed me an early retirement package in 2001 it took me about five minutes to skim the contents for the basics, and then sign it. All the 25 years I spent working for Jeep Engineering,I loved my job, except for the last two years, under the union. Union control ruined the work environment,it was not fun any more. I never looked back. At first it was hard to except not making the big bucks any longer. After about five years that feeling was gone. Now I try hard to enjoy life, and not worry about the future. I retired on the 14th of last month, so I am still going through the mental transition. It was hard to walk out the door, leaving all of the friends I had worked with for years. That was my comfort zone.
The first week was stressful. I had been defined as a Registered Nurse for nearly 40 years, making decisions that affected other people’s lives. And now I no longer had that role. That was depressing.
During the 2nd week, I lightened up, realizing I might work a weekend a month. More importantly, I realized that the decisions I was now making were just as rewarding, and that I could be decisive outside of the work environment.
The 3rd week I was so busy, and contented, that I really don’t want to go back to work at all.
Incidentally, I retired on Sept 14, and on the 26th hand my heart attack (no residual problems).
Thanks for letting me vent.

I retired the day that officially marked my 40th year with the District . Nearly 10 years ago. Do not miss it for one second !!!! Hope we have another 10 years
of traveling and enjoying the good life. Like others we make more money retired
than working. Now if I could just convince the DW that we should sell the stick house. But she insists that she has to have a house to come back to after months away

I envy so many of you being able to retire in your fifties. 55 seems to be the norm here. I will have to work until 65 to have a financially secure retirement. Just under 2 years to go and looking forward to it.

I have a question, You say at 52 you can afford to retire. considering inflation, will you still be able to afford it in thirty years? Think about how much you were making thirty years ago compared to today, or just compare the cost of living. If your investments are growing faster than the rate of inflation, you're probably ok. But, it's something to consider.
My take is to retire as soon as you can afford to (looking down the road into the future). If you get bored, go back to work at something you enjoy.

If you're worried about not finding anything to do, don't. We've been retired since 2005, and now I wonder how I ever found 40 to 60 hours of free time each week to spend at the job.

I took retirement very slowly. I took 3 yrs to fully retire. I have enjoyed retirement being able to get up when I want to and volunteer for various charities. I still keep busy but I love traveling in my rv 2 months at a time. I don't think I could handle full time rving.
