I am looking at a Lance Squire 3000, 8.5' truck camper for mainly weekend get aways. It is 300 miles away, and I am going to pick it up if I like it. I have an 07 Dodge 3500 Quad Cab Dually. I have the torklift tie downs on the front, and happijac on the rear. I also have the turnbuckles. What else will I need to load the camper and carry it? Do I need a spacer on the floor of the bed? Any other suggestions? THX
One thing you will need is the Lance plug or female part with the little door flap. The part from the trailer I would call the male part goes into the other that you will put on your truck. You can check here I think someone has already put up a picture of the wiring for the Lance plug. This connection is mainly for the tail lights on the camper. When I had my Lance I bought the plug from someone on Ebay. Or maybe the fellow who has the camper will give it to you. Can't think of anything else, maybe someone else will.
You might need something to put under the camper to raise it high enough to clear the cab. Don't know about Dodge but I had to raise the camper to clear my late model Ford. As far as the plug since the camper is only 8.6 you will not cover your Dodge tail lights unless it is a short bed. You will need the plug later to keep the camper battery charged, etc
THX for the replies. I guess the main question is for the dodge guys. Do I need to have a sheet of plywood or something in the bed to kift the camper a bit to clear the roof? THX
A thin rubber floor mat that fits between the wheel wells. A thin one gives you less sway of the box. I haven't heard of Dodge's needing a spacer to clear the cab.
You cannot load the camper on a duallie without the (swingout) extensions for just the two forward jacks. I made my own 'non-swingout' out of 2"x8" channel iron. Drilled and champhered appropriate holes to extend jacks:
Check to see if the camper has electric jacks. This could be more problematic if not already installed with 'swing-outs' as many of those electric jacks are hard wired through the camper.
You must have the main electrical connection figured out ahead of time. Once the TC is on, there's no way to access the plug location on the inside of the truck bed. When you do wire the truck to camper male end, make sure to run a truck to camper battery wire of thicker than advertised gage. 8 gage should be enough.
Also wire in a cut-off switch to isolate the truck batteries from the camper battery(s).
I back mostly on, get out, plug in the umbelical, and back the rest of the way on.
regards, as always, jefe
