We have Dish Network at home and I have heard I can take my receiver along with me while camping as well as a dish and get service. Might as well, I'm paying for it to sit unused at home anyhow.

What all is involved with pointing the dish and what zip code do you use on the settings if you're out in the woods? I'd really like to set myself up for camping and hunting next year to have satellite tv. I have a couple of extra direct tv dishes--now this is probably a stupid question but to they have to be dish network to work? After all the dish is just the lnb right and dish right? If not I'll sell them and get some dish network dishes. Thanks in advance!

If you have the dish pro setup you can NOT use the direct TV dish because it’s not compatible with the dish. If you have the dish legacy you can use the direct TV dish.

You use the zip code of the city / place where ever your at when your setting up.

First thing you need to do is find out what dish setup you have then you can figure out what you might need if anything. Easy way is to look at your LNB if is says Dish Pro then you will know. If it dosent say Dish pro then you have the legacy system.

I use the Dish Network in the RV and have traveled from coast to coast. You will enter you zip code to get you settings, angle, skew, compass setting. I used a 20 dollar meter for signal strength. Dish is a little harder being that you have to make sure both LBN's are locked in, not just one. And it seems Direct has positioned the Satellites right beside Dish Net. Takes a little practice but very due able. Bill

Use the Zip Code of the nearest town.

It depends. If the DirecTV dish has a single LNB, then you'll be able to use it with your Dish Network receiver EXCEPT you won't get HD programming and you'll only be able to "see" one satellite. When we were Dish Network customers, we found that everything we wanted to watch was on the 119 satellite, so never bothered with the 110 satellite...and we used a DirecTV single-LNB dish.

Now, if you're interested in HD programming or you want to watch programming on more than one satellite, then you need to get a Dish Network-specific dish.

Depending on the amount of programming you are paying for and want to try and see, if you have multiple single lnb dishes you can have some fun. You could aim 1 at ECHO_119 aim another at ECHO_110 and use a SW-21 switch to combine the signal (works legacy or DishPro). If you want HD add a third dish aimed at (ECHO_129 west coast) or (ECHO_61 east coast) connected through a SW-64 switch.

It is a pain to manually target multiple sats but is workable. Use the "Dish 300" selection in the pointing screen and tell it which sat to look for. Hook them up and aim them one at a time. When they are all pointed then hook them to the desired switch.

This will even work with multiple tuner receivers and multiple receivers if the coax is run correctly for the setup.

I use a Dish 500 with DP Plus Twin LNBF, a tripod and an Align-a-Site. With the Align a Site I can usually get set up in less than 10 minutes. There have been a few times when I didn't even need to tweak the position after the initial set up. The Align a Site is a little pricey but worth it especially if you can get it on sale.

If you are out of your spotbeam area you won't be able to get the locals. We suscribe to All american Direct to get thr East coast National networks on the road. They use the Dish sats.

This gets discussed almost daily, certainly weekly on this forum. Without much effort, you can find all the answers you need by just scrolling through the listings. A search will turn up LOTS of info. Good luck.
