any tethering charge is ON TOP of the cellphone voice plan, NOT instead of.
tethering the cell phone can be turned on & off, effectively pro-rating the tethering charges to the number of days used at $2 per day, tethering does NOT affect your voice plan charges.
the OP's Dare ( wifes phone ) can be tethered, but doing so will drop the $15 Vcast, and she will not be able to get it back.
changing too the NEW plans with the the $10 25mb data plan is an exercise in wasting money. something any wise person will stay away from.
the NEW simplified enhance ? premiere ? combined data & msg plans, are there to produce more revenue 'cash flow' for verizon, its like the 'bundled channel' plans cable TV providers use. put more into one plan and charge just a little less than what the indivual services would if available piece meal, since some users send NO txt, they are just paying extra money for mobile web, and those users that send lots of txt and pix but no web or no watching vzw videos are paying extra for what they want to use.
if avg user buys into this 'en mass', it will only get worse.
best thing to do, is just say no, and ask intelligent questions, and decide what you need. and stick too it.

I got Verizon LG Dares for my DW and me about three months ago.
Our main criteria was to be able to tether a laptop as needed while on vacation. (A secondary criteria was that it would take an external antenna.)
We did not get Vcast for $15/mo. I'm a big-picture guy and not too interested in a tiny Web experience.
We do have the option to tether at ~$2/day.
My calculation:$15/mo x 24 mo for Vcast = $360 for a 2 year contract.
That is the equivalent of around 180 days of vacation tether over a two year period. Some campgrounds, coffee shops, rural libraries offer wifi. That has worked ok for us many times in the past. I expect to save money with the tether since we probably won't need 180 connection days.
My brother and his wife love their iPhones but email and flying is their thing. I like weather radars and large maps and big screens to design things on. For us the tether works better.

Verizon recently offered a change to its Broadband Access plan with 5 Gb per month. The overage rate on the new plan is $0.05 per KB vs. $0.25 per KB on the old plan. You must call to get the new plan or your service will stay on the plan with the higher overage.
I made the change as soon as I could. There is no benefit to the old plan. Verizon (and its competitors) will not ever change your rate plan without your approval--it is against the law (remember "slamming"?). It is up to you to determine whether there is benefit in doing it.
My Verizon local store tells me the teathered plan which is $10 less a month for the 5 gig plan is slower than using a usb. Only 10 bucks but why pay more if the other on works the same
